Default Coronavirus: Threat Beyond Politics [For Political Discussions of CoV]

As shock value oriented as DM can be the vids here alone stand on their own. Bat soup, live stock origin?

Coronavirus is the latest round in an age-old struggle

    https://www.ft.com/content/bd6cad34-...c-0f8435cd42d9

Pandemics and politics do not mix well.

    From article:

Reporting suggests that animals may have been the original source — as was the case with Sars, another virus in the same family — reflecting the proximity which millions in China share with livestock. The emergence of new diseases has also been worsened by climate change, which has expanded the temperate region where pathogens can thrive, according to the World Health Organisation.

Today’s strategy of containment — one of the key measures deployed against endemic diseases — would be familiar to civil authorities and medical personnel as far back as the ancient world. “Quarantine” has its roots in the Venetian Republic’s 14th century efforts to keep out the plague. But the maritime power would have been hard-pressed to institute a cordon sanitaire on a Chinese scale. The ability to lock down cities the size of Wuhan, which is about as big as London, is a reflection of the power of Beijing’s ever more authoritarian rule.

Misinformation, and disinformation, are also still prevalent. During the outbreak of Spanish flu in 1918-19, conspiracy theories of enemy bioweapons circulated. An 1853 outbreak of yellow fever in New Orleans was blamed on immigrants...

So far, I haven't heard of importing corona virus with Chinese food and products. It might be a good idea to wash off new Chinese made products and one's hands anyway as the last person handling it was in China.

    Lol. Keep to American milk.

That's probably not a risk, but there are good reasons to avoid Chinese products altogether. [[I know: impossible. But we can try.) Just one example: the melamine scandal.

My Vietnamese-born, American-educated doctor with an office in one of NY's Chinatowns to serve the local community advised me to try to avoid all food products with ingredients from China.

Some of his advice: avoid vitamin supplements. Get them naturally from a healthy diet instead. Most supplements are made in China and can cause more harm than good. Poor manufacturing and fraud are much bigger problems there than they are here. So when deciding between orange juice and orange juice with extra vitamins, buy the simpler stuff. Milk too. And if you're lucky enough to still have a local bakery, get your bread there, not the plastic-wrapped vitamin-"enriched" food putty from the aisles.

From Stat News, something of a head-ups on the potential for supply problems with some medications. Not a likely risk of contamination, but still supply interruptions.

A 61 year old male in Taiwan has died from the virus,he had traveled nowhere and they suspect that he caught it from a passenger that had ridden in his cab,so they really do not know how widespread or how many really effected.

Another cruise ship has docked in Cambodia after being refused entry at 5 other countries,an American woman that had tested positive twice for the virus escaped and boarded a flight to Malisia doing her part to spread it worldwide.

More leaked video from China shows the police welding the steel doors shut on a residential house so the family cannot leave, hopefully there will be no fire there, not that it matters because if they are low in food they will be lucky to last the week alive.

That is what they are doing, you can only leave for getting a bag of food to survive, get caught outside for any other reason and they lock the whole family down in the house, nobody leaves.

Death toll at ground zero in China has reached 1800 the total amount that they know are effected is 69,000 as of today,it seems to be doubling every week and the spread worldwide is increasing.

If the numbers keep increasing at the rate they are it is going to Interesting to see how this effects people going out to vote come November.

As of this morning, the number of new cases in China has slightly dipped in each of the last three days. However, if coronavirus gets loose in a poorer country without such totalitarian governmental controls like Congo, it might be impossible to control.

What is the average dollar cost of treating one case of this sickness in the United States by families, insurance companies, and governments? I haven't seen any such numbers reported.

Its usually reported that 2-3% of the number of patients who have become sick with coronavirus have died. That isn't the same has reporting the ratio of those whose illness has been resolved by either death or complete recovery. In post #22, I linked to John Hopkins site. By February 10, coronavirus had killed 910 and 3,517 had made a total recovery. I just looked that up again [[Feb. 16) and the tally is now 1,770 dead and 10,872 totally recovered.

Of the cases resolved on Feb. 10, 20.6% resulted in death.
Of the cases resolved on Feb. 16, 14% had resulted in death.

That's some improvement but nowhere near 2-3%. A Taiwanese doctor is reporting that recovered patients who get reinfected have a more serious second round of the disease.

Trump is delaying his 3pm press conference to wait for the market to close. Wouldn't want to associate his comments with another market fall.

Yes, responding to this rather late but I watched this AM's interview with Dr. Fauci -- and he again remarked on the slight reduction in China but they are on HEAVY lock-down not possible here. I am fearing that the UNITED states will be dis-united in terms of response, attitude and vigilance re. this virus. Like one state may be like Italy levels another lower. Fauci also pointed out that once China lets up on their severe lock-down it is questionable rather or not the numbers will increase. I am spread of the virus upon the continent of Africa would be hard to contain:

Dr. Fauci has told Trump he wants an 'overly aggressive' response to the coronavirus-but stops short of calling for a 14 day national shutdown...

    • Fauci said it's 'possible' the US death toll could near 2 million if mitigation and containment efforts fail
    • The 'worst case scenario' numbers were published by The New York Times last week based on Centers for Disease Control and Prevention scenarios
    • 'Although that's possible, it is unlikely if we do the kinds of things that we're essentially outlining right now,' he said Sunday morning
    • Dr Fauci said he would rather America be 'overly aggressive and get criticized for overreacting' and that citizens should be prepared to 'hunker down'

FDA withdraws emergency use authorization for hydroxychloroquine

    https://thehill.com/policy/healthcar...oxychloroquine

The Food and Drug Administration [[FDA) has withdrawn the emergency use authorization for two controversial coronavirus treatment drugs promoted by President Trump because of serious safety issues. The agency said recent clinical trial failures mean chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine may not be effective at treating COVID-19 or preventing it in people who have been exposed, and that their potential benefits do not outweigh the risks.

Former Republican Presidential candidate Herman Cain hospitalized with COVID-19 after attending Trump's Tulsa rally:

    https://ktul.com/news/local/former-p...er-trump-rally

Given the timing of his hospitalization, it's probably not likely that he contracted it at the Tulsa rally, but more likely that he was already infected when he traveled there [[and therefore was shedding the virus at the rally itself). Trump rallies are just huge COVID petri dishes at this point.

Meanwhile another Trump campaign surrogate, Trump Jr. girlfriend [[and former mistress) Kimberly Guilfoyle, has also tested positive for COVID-19.

Her jaunts around the country to non-socially distancing campaign events have put a number of GOP officials in a bind, including Montana Senator Greg Gianforte who is facing a critical re-election battle to keep his seat and now has to skip the campaign trail for two weeks to self-isolate.

I think as the weeks go on, we're going to see more self-inflicted wounds as more and more Trump campaign staff and campaign surrogates either contact COVID or are waylaid with weeks of self-isolation after coming into contact with those who do.

REPUBLICAN Governor Larry Hogan [[R-MD) wrote a blistering Op-Ed in the Washington Post criticizing Trump's COVID-19 response, accusing him of abandoning the states to their own devices, not helping the State of Maryland, and "bungling" the response to virus which made it far worse than it needs to be. Again, this scathing op-ed was written by a top elected member of Trump's own party.

At a time when the U.S. is setting records for new cases and the death count is spiking, the Trump Administration wants to slash funding to the CDC and the NIH and cut [[or eliminate) funding for COVID testing.

If you don't test, then poof, the virus goes away like magic.

    Um, NO.

    Try reading it again.

It's talking about not having billions MORE in funding as part of another stimulus package.

Also, the CDC does very little testing, and testing is already available for everyone.

Trump spreading more COVID disinformation, claiming that children are "almost immune" to the virus. That's a verifiable lie. Facebook and Twitter removed videos of Trump making this comment, posted by the Trump Campaign, for violating their rules about spreading COVID misinformation.

Twitter also locked the account of the Trump Campaign for spreading COVID disinformation.

But then again, what would you expect from a man who promotes "doctors" who believe that some diseases are caused by "having sex with demons" and has warned people against a future COVID vaccine by claiming that it will contain "Alien DNA."

Those of us with an IQ over 50 clearly understood that to mean that young children are almost immune to ill-effects and death from Covid,.. not that they couldn't catch it.

The America-hating leftist media have their orders,.. and they're not about to pass up an opportunity to deceive the public and incite hatred and division by lying about the president.

aj, I already touched on this in post #1499. As to whether children are "almost immune", it depends on how "almost" is defined as well as what precautions are taken for the children's safety whether they are at school or whatever their non-school situation is. They are more immune by some accounts as I previously mentioned. Not everyone shares the political and medical opinions of Twitter staffers.
