What's an absurd assumption is that what you call "socialism" would represent up to 50% of the economy. It doesn't.

70% of the economy is pure consumer spending, mostly on "things".

Like our most industrialized competition, Japan, Germany, China, the EU, which have socialized health care and education, which only makes up 15 % of their tax spending, we need to compete, and can, but we need to prioritize. No more multi-billion dollar defense budgets, higher taxes on the wealthiest, returning them to Clinton-era tax rates, etc.

Health care is 20-25% by itself, Education [[including University) is another 10% at least....30-35% by simple addition.

China is the only country not currently heading in the dumper and it is only afforded this position by virtue of its' quasi capitalist policies. However, unless they truly abandon socialism/communism, it will not be long before they descend into misery.

France spends 57% of each Euro on "culture" which includes museums, parks, maintenance of historic monuments, libraries, etc.

The remaining 43% is spend on myriad things, such as health care, military, foreign aid, etc.

Shows you how priorities in this country are really screwed up.

An erroneous premise...government should never ever get anywhere near the point of controlling 57% of a nation's wealth...That is why the EU is rapidly declining, and the citizens are the victims of the decline.

BTW, not a good idea to venture to emulate the economy of France....unless you want to have zero credibility.

If they don't throw off communism/socialism, their ascent will be both short lived and unfelt in terms of standards of living for the populace. In other words, the communist overlords will become more rich and powerful [[for a brief while)...and that is it.

The media only paid attention to her kids because Palin herself put them out there and used them as political props. She should be blamed for child abuse for doing so. And it didn't even help her situation out, which is the real irony.

Why were they at the convention? Dragging infants out to hold up as your big achievement in life while running for VP is disgusting.

Calling her daughter a "whore" is over the line, but I can't remember anyone doing that besides David Letterman. Letterman hasn't been funny for donkey's years, he knows it, and he's desperate for attention. Just another sad old has-been.

Now, I can see is that she objected to the attention being put on her family. I can believe she very much does not like that aspect of it. Of course, she didn't help matters by parading her family around and pimping them as a symbol of her commitment to traditional family values –a major cornerstone of the Republican platform.

So let me get this straight:

Palin's daughter is trotted out to show support for her mother's "family values" position and is discovered to be pregnant out of wedlock *gasp!* with a boyfriend who has no job *double gasp!* and the media pilories her and her mother as hypocritical. [[Probably unjustified in the daughter's case--she was only doing what teenagers sometimes regrettably do, which is make poor choices.)

Obama's daughter...wears a t-shirt? With a retro peace symbol on it? And is vilified by the right as a "whore" and "ghetto" and other such epithets that have nothing whatsoever to do with the t-shirt, its purported message, or any of Obama's positions.

I'm sorry, but I don't see the equivalence here that some are trying to build a case for.

I suppose if she wore a plain red t-shirt she would be branded as a vile Communist? Where will the madness end?

Newsflash: Water is wet!

On an ancillary note, Elganned's statements reminded me of a conversation I had with a "conservative" friend during the last election. We were looking at all the video footage of right wing lunatics acting like imbeciles and saying things that made no sense at all. He said that there were just as many lunatics on the other side of the aisle. I asked him "then why aren't there just as many video clips available showing that?" Never did get a response to that one......

I've been here the whole time, just not posting as much.

A lot of threads seem to disintegrate almost immediately into the same pattern, which really drives people away from the conversation. [[me included). Issue offered -> trite response about capitalism that often has nothing to do with issue and is demonstrably false -> Reply pointing that out -> some crap about communism, socialism or some other nutjob talking points -> a few rational comments sprinkled in -> and then wash, rinse, repeat.....

But I did take your advice on Ravine's thread to heart...Not posting anything doesn't improve the situation.

So you'll probably be hearing more from me soon.
