I've noticed that the "One Year Deal" is becoming more popular in MLB, like the NBA. Teams are not willing to commit to long term contracts, especially when they involve veteran players. Josh Donaldson and Brian McCann both signed 1 yr deals with the Atlanta Braves yesterday, and Lonnie Chisenhall signed a 1 year deal with the Pirates.
Analytics is making teams wise up to younger, more athletic guys and shorter term deals for veterans. Still, Donaldson is coming off 2 injury plagued seasons and otherwise would have gotten a longer deal. I'm surprised they gave him 23 million guaranteed. I would have expected 15 million and incentives based on game played. McCann is now a veteran platoon catcher who was also injured and hit .212 last year. He's going to be on one year deals the remainder of his career.
