Yeah, I know one like that too. Great thread, though, with a terrific out come.

the doors were definitely slimmer back in the day. we were narrow then. you should see the small 1950s 1960 era wheelchairs at the Woodlawn Mausoleum. very narrow in width.

    Greetings CKE and welcome.

So what are the chances that there were two Dr. Eder's on good ol’ Vernor Hwy?

The door was taken off the hinges by yours truly during the rehab of the upstairs of a building at 5616 W Vernor Hwy. Entrance is through the RED DOOR and up one flight of stairs. Address could have been 5610 W Vernor Hwy?? Not sure since the building has been converted. I do know that the street level store front was a funeral home until the late 70's then a shoe store until last year. It is now a retail store.

CKE...the one story medical building that you describe is about a mile down west on the Highway towards Central. 7615 W. Vernor Hwy.

    See the 2018 store front.

Ahem, not to threadjack here....but what the heck is this towering orange structure on W. Vernor Hwy? I believe that it was built under Mayor Coleman A. Young’s watch in the 1970’s. It’s a little weathered and doesn’t light up anymore but it still looks futuristic and kind of cool.

So CKE, because of your description of your father’s office, I am not sure if the door is from his office?

Perhaps your uncle Melvyn Eder had an office in southwest Detroit then relocated his practice to Birmingham?

If if this door could only talk....

Thanks Mr. SW_kid for coming back and providing more information and the photos. It appears the door is from the Dr. Melvyn Eder's Office, not Dr. Herbert Eder's office because you got the door from the 2-story storefront, but CKE's father, Herbert, worked out of a 1-story building.

Now its appears there was a 3rd Eder [[Warren). This family was quite successful, but I wondered what he died from; he was only 41 years old according to the news obituary.

Somewhere in the mid-80s, Detroit wanted to "modernize" neighborhoods to stop them from completely eroding, so they added these "objects de art" here and there, W. Vernor being one of them. Here is a photo I found of a larger project Downtown on Washington Blvd., trying to make it a "walkable" neighborhood, after a lot of the businesses moved out. You can see the similar red trellises there, and an early attempt @ a Blight Rail.

Everything was smaller, because people in general were.

Good point. Go to Greenfield Village and look @ the beds, clothes, etc., on display. Everything was shorter and smaller.
