Reporters are smoking cigarettes at their desk and using <gasp> typewriters! Unlike computers, typewriters had no lag. LOL!

Did you notice how many times a story would be re-entered into a machine? From reporter -> transcriptionist [[used to call 'em "stenos") -> copy editor -> rewrite -> [[eventually, maybe) page layout -> ... -> linotype ... then molded into rotary form, hand-carried to rotary press, then hand-installed. Wow! Computerization "flattened" this process - newspapers laid off many workers...
