What was the worst school massacre in US history? Columbine? Sandy Hook? Virginia Tech?
No. It took place in tiny Bath, Michigan, 90 years ago today. A disgruntled taxed enough already farmer planted dynamite in the Bath school, and detonated it. When his mayhem was complete 38 elementary schoolchildren and 6 adults were dead and at least 58 other people injured. Wikipedia
This was in a village of 300. Luckily, the attacker only destroyed one wing of the school, his charges under the other wing failing to detonate.
I grew up in a village 15 miles away. Maybe the adults didn't want us to know about that bit of history, because I was unaware of the tragedy until later in life. In March I finally visited the site. It is memorialized by the cupola of the school, seen in the picture above, in a quiet little park with historical markers and the names of the victims.
