Detroit is the only city in Michigan and, perhaps, in the US that imposes a 5% city tax on utility bills. What is the definition of a utility bill? I assume it includes electricity, water, gas and oil. Does it also include telephone service and cable TV? I suppose few people heat their homes with coal at present.
We pay a deposit on soda and beer cans and bottles. I assume that the number returned for deposit is smaller than the total number of cans and bottles sold. What happens to unclaimed deposits? Does that money kept by the store returned to the bottler or does it go to the state?
Thank you.
