Wow, that wasn't the point at all. The trolley line in Detroit wasn't a real mass transit line, it was only meant for tourists to see the city, and was not used for commuting. Anyhow, there's a reason San Francisco uses CABLE CARS, and it's not because they are neat looking. The hills in San Francisco have such a steep grade that there is no other mass transit mode which is capable of climbing the grade - only cable cars can make it.

Guess I will have to look up more photos on the net. My only real memories of Wash Blvd are of the tinker toy trolley era til now.And the fact that I use Washington to get to the Tiger games makes my Dad say this was a beautiful street and its about time they took down them red pipes.

Actually you are incorrect. The cable cars are kept around for their vintage novelty that find their heaviest ridership from tourists. There's plenty of other transit lines that parallel or cross cable car lines. Yeah, true they are one of the few vehicles that make it up those steep of grades, but walk another block or two in another direction and you have other transit options. BTW, SF has conventional trolleys, so bringing up the whole cable car thing is kind of irrelevant.
