When they were naming Canada, the citizens wanted a catchy three-letter name, like the USA, but were unable to agree on which three letters sounded best. To break the stalemate, they decided to randomly draw three letters out of a hat, and announce the new name of the country in front of a live audience of citizens and media reporters from around the world.
In order to insure public buy-in and authenticity, they chose a local citizen to announce the live drawing of the three letters:
"C, eh? ----- N, eh? ----- D, eh?"
And that is how Canada got its name.
