Michigan's been in recession since 2001. The meltdown of the big three and thier suppliers started then. Which do you think really caused the all the foreclosures? A few people with a gambling problem, or the disintegration of Michigan's primary employers.
The only controlled figure for effect of a casino on the area was one reported by WDET and/or the Freep after the Windsor casino had been open for a couple years...
...they said the number of Gambler's Anonymous chapters went from 4 to 200 after only the first year of operation.
I've never been able to confirm this, probably accounted by the primary source's public anonymity and all, but nobody argues it.
After the three opened on this side of the river, I have never seen any sort of follow-up.
Sure would be curious to chart THAT trend...
A few people with a gambling problem!!! Sounds like you don't get out much. Go to any one of the casinos. Go into the parking structure and check out the cars. The plates will be 99% Michigan plates.
True, Michigan has been in a recession but it is a fact that gambling has accelerated things like losing savings and foreclosures.
