I think downtown retail will come. It has to. Especially if the Illitch district comes to fruition. You will have a critical mass of people living in a corridor. Young people, interested in buying overpriced, new, exciting things with discretionary income to spend. To me, the opportunity is right for stores to come into the downtown market like Target, Macy's, Lord & Taylor, TJMaxx, Nordstrom Rack, Saks Off Fifth, etc. in a few years, but right now its a bit premature. Our downtown is too sprawly at the moment to make that happen, and the idea that someone will build a 500,000 square foot store downtown is pure silliness. Large national chains right now don't know what to do with their huge real estate buildings.
