Beautiful people are everywhere but according to a Travel + Leisure magazine survey, the exception is Detroit.

The magazine is conducting a survey to find America's favorite places. In the survey, users can rank their city's culture, people, food, etc. One of the survey results is which cities are home to the most attractive and the least attractive people.

Detroit pulled in rank as the least attractive city in the U.S. Yes, we topped that list at Number One.

I'm sure you could fill the top ten least attractive cities list with cities from Mississippi alone, but I digress. Of course Miami, New York, L.A, etc are where the most beautiful people congregate. That's where all the waiter, I mean modeling, gigs are at.....

I think it's a function of environment. When it's 20 degrees in the evening and the only places to go are dimly lit bars or Walmart, you get into the habit of not caring about what you look like. Sweatpants are a style in Detroit, and you know it's true.

That's part of the reason.

Also, Detroit is a blue collar town. So, collectively, people here tend to be rough around the edges and don't feel they have to go around looking like fashion models or impress anyone with their looks.

I don't know about Detroit alone as the top of the heap of unattractive people. I have noticed over the years that the average american has been dressing worse and worse. Throw in dunlop disease and wide, extra wide fannies in sweats.

i couldnt agree more, its embarrassing how badly people dress today, and so many out of shape people. You really notice it when you watch city street scenes in movies 20 years and older. We have really tanked. People who dress nicely, even decently for that matter still get more respect.

Still think plenty of eye candy/male or female. Not bi either. Are we talking style or just looks. Go to church and on occasion, I go super casual as in jeans and a sweater. We have a retired pastor who attends our church too and I apologized once for being so not church dressed. she said, I look way better then some church attire she has seen. Point is go to church or temple or whatever and enjoy life.

My husband always wear a suit tie etc for church, slim trim and always hot in my eyes.

For many years, Nordstrom was a Pacific NW department store. They were building a new mall called Galleria in northern Virginia and got the president of Nordstrom to come look at the area with a view to being an anchor store in the new mall. As a part of the tour, he was taken through the existing Tyson's Corners Mall. He was amazed at how the women shopping were so well dressed at 10:30-11:00 in the morning. He didn't see any woman with a scarf and curlers. Then and there, he said to skip on the proposed galleria and made a contract with the Tyson's Corners Mall to build a new wing with Nordstrom's first east coast store as an anchor.

I do quite a bit of travel for work. Has nothing to do with cold weather. I was in Stockholm for a while..half the year is cold and dark yet everyone is freaking gorgeous and not only that, really nice. When I spend a little time away from here [[and the midwest in general) and come back it's really sort of shocking. It may just be a bit of familiarity breeding contempt, but it really is amazing how insanely fat, slobby, and generally unpleasant the average person is around here. It's almost toxic. I agree that it's probably not "dead last" but really people... get some effing exercise, take off the pajama pants and hoodie, shower, put down the fork, put down the 72oz Mountain Dew, and smile once in a while.

Attractive by whose standards? It's obvious these surveys are a reflection of mainstream American standards of beauty. And Detroit being primarily African American doesn't help that perception.

Although I agree obesity rates are higher here I would say that there are plenty of attractive women in the region. Compared to the other cities at the top of least attractive, most of which I have traveled, there is more of an emphasis on fashion, hair, makeup, etc.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder though..

You must never have lived in the east side suburbs. There, dressing up is VS's PINK sweatpants with boots. For men, a brand name hoodie will suffice for any occasion.

When I lived in the Hazel Park/Madison Heights area [[OAKLAND COUNTY, people), it was a big deal that I didn't wear t-shirts 99% of the time. I was like the height of high fashion.
