Yesterday I read an article [[in "HOUR" Detroit) about a new Detroit based
high end manufacturing concern [[of timepieces). For it to fly, one master craftsman of European background had to be hired and, based on one
photo, at least one African American lady [[making MORE! than $7 an
hour) was also hired, for assembly labor. This reprises Detroit's history
    in miniature for sure.
Suppose you are a young neighbor in the master craftsman's neighborhood,
wherever it may be. Say the craftsman makes much more than $7 an hour.
[[Pure speculation). Even if not, it's tougher to have an attitude "work is
for chumps", and live on the streets, scrapping, dog dealing, whatever
works, than if you are the African American lady's young neighbor of any ethnic background.

I am positive there is another thread about this specific sickening crime:
A young African American man who worked at a dollar store in Dearborn
killed another young man and also a young lady who worked at that dollar
store. This was cruel and senseless indeed. It also impacted the
Dearborn/Detroit community directly within the context of other crime.
From since the early 80s, when I moved to East Dearborn from Allen Park,
I have been renting carpet cleaners from the hardware store that is now adjacent to this dollar store. And the last time I went to rent a carpet
cleaner, and this is the first time this happened to me in all these years,
the sales associate called over a manager, and [[she is so refreshingly
honest) says, "you live in DETROIT?!" [[with a tone of sincere horror).
Suppose the crime rate dropped today instantly from Detroit level which is four times higher than Warren level, past Warren level, down to the
Pleasanton, California level which is a hundred times less than what Detroit has. I may be exaggerating a little bit but you can check with Crimemapper to see how much I am exaggerating. Correct me please, and then suppose....
Instead of the horror, instead of a wary double ID check along with the carpet cleaner, this sales associate will be so pleased tomorrow to be selling me all kinds of stuff to help me fix up my bombed out neighborhood.
[[Actually HD would have that covered a bit better and is closer to home,
    but still).
I promise you, liberals realize that crime is a problem in Detroit, but since
there is a Pleasanton that has VERY low crime and is also quite liberal we don't see that being liberal leads to a life of crime.

Sounds like you should be renting carpet cleaners from another store if that is their counter person's reaction.

You might be right about that and there is a place closer to home that rents
out carpet cleaners for a bit less as well.
Still, I would hazard a guess that this sales associate was at least acquainted
with the persons who were killed recently and in any case the crime hit close to home for her and her coworkers, and we all would look for a Way Forward
out of the crime zone, and that is their way forward.
Whether putting Detroit customers on the spot for living in Detroit is the
best way forward can certainly be questioned, but until someone has a
coherent way forward that is better and acceptable, I would let them do it their way. I might not be so forgiving if I didn't know about the crime.
