Do you want the yuppies [[those wierdos who actually pay taxes) in Detroit or do you want them in Novi?First they kicked out the weirdos at the Griswold lofts... and I did not speak out because I do not live downtown anymore.
Then they kicked out the weirdos at Showplace Collectibles... and I did not speak out because I only go in there once in awhile.
And pretty soon Detroit was a bland, boring overpriced yuppie hellhole... and there was nobody left to speak out for me.
Keep holding down the block at Temple Bar, George!
Fuck Illitch.
Since the new owner brought all of the buildings at the long dead Detroit Chinatown district. It wants to make sure that all the useless vintage shops and DEAD [[C)KRAK HEADS are out.
You folks are just addicted to bitching, I can see that.
Please, on a regular basis, patronize the plethora of party stores, wig shops, nail salons, check-cashing establishments, fly-by-night mobile phone stores, and African Hair Braiding specialists as a way of expressing your vehement distaste for the soul-killing "gentrification" that threatens your beloved status quo.
Where does the tattoo shop fit into the gentrification?
I understand you frustration... perhaps they are thankful that more of this "cancer" hasn't spread to the rest of the city.... Think of all the displaced storefront churches!!You folks are just addicted to bitching, I can see that.

But in all seriousness... there's something to be said in having a lease with few loopholes...
I have...absolutely no...clue as to what...thoughts you may...or may not...be expressing.
I don't know what their lease actually says, but it is common in cases where there is a low rent lease to have a short notice period just in case a "full market" lease offer or a sale of the property drops out of the blue.
Hey wait a minute - I go to some of those nail salons...... No, I mostly do my own nails!

I'm thinking Livonia would probably be a better place for you to live. You folks are just addicted to bitching, I can see that.

No, actually that is 35+ years of living in Detroit talking.
Well then, I don't see how you could be condoning this kind of "Urban Renewal". Nor do I understand your dislike for existing Detroit businesses. Mix some new with some old, not throw people who've been there for 20 + years. I bet once the Yupsters filled in, and visited "Showcase Collectables", they would have done quite well for themselves. I've taken friends there from ritzier ends of town, and they always managed to find something to buy. Not every "new" business coming to Detroit has to be done in bad lobby decor, and have a contrived "theme" to it.
I did not condone a damned thing, nor did I vote for anyone being thrown out of anywhere.
This, right here, this is exactly how these threads get thrown off-track.
By nightfall, Nick Charles will be regarded as the guy who condoned gentrification and wanted Showcase evicted.
Why? Not because I said so, but because you said so, and because nobody wants to actually read-- certainly not with any comprehension-- anything more than whatever the last one, or two, people wrote.
Why are you so opposed to high-end cufflink shoppes?Well then, I don't see how you could be condoning this kind of "Urban Renewal". Nor do I understand your dislike for existing Detroit businesses. The owner of Showcase Collectibles can move to the corner storefront at Cass and W. Warren where Marwil's used to be. That will lure some yuppified customers.
I think for some of us it's just a matter of condoning simple business with no malicious intent. A building was for a sale and was purchased. The current store can find a new location. This is in no way a rare occurrence.Well then, I don't see how you could be condoning this kind of "Urban Renewal". Nor do I understand your dislike for existing Detroit businesses. Is it just a fondness for this particular business that sparks your outrage or do you post endlessly on some other forum for this type of typical business transaction?
I believe that some of the above posters are rather bitter that Detroit is becoming a real, live, city. Versus what has been up till now, a hipster's paradise. The better things are, the more rents rise. That's a fact of life. Unfortunately.I think for some of us it's just a matter of condoning simple business with no malicious intent. It's time to start paying the price for all those amenities of life that the poor unfortunates in the REST of Detroit have been supporting with their tax dollars all these years.
Well, the rent for that spot is likely to be far out of their reach, but if they could swing it, that's a helluva good idea, and I'll bet it would pay off, too.
I only post here to get your goat.I think for some of us it's just a matter of condoning simple business with no malicious intent. A building was for a sale and was purchased. The current store can find a new location. This is in no way a rare occurrence.

I suppose that it's always nice to be quoted, but I think everyone else understood it the first time. And I quote..... Oh Lord...........
So you are under the mistaken impression that if he charged $550 a month in rent, that he was clearing $550 a month in profit from this tenant? You do know he had to pay property taxes out of that money, right? And maintenance/upkeep costs?
After expenses, the landlord was making peanuts on that property. Loyalty is great, but it seems many here expect it to be one-directional. The landlord has bills to pay too. He's got to make a living just like the tenant. Maybe he's got kids in college that he's go to pay tuition for. You don't know.
