But carry it all the way out...All recipients of government/taxpayer money based on need [[or political favor) not merit are reprehensible.

I am open to judging each on a case by case basis.

And....how do you judge the scenario I just described?

I would take it case by case, and if the need were important for the good of the masses, then I would support some form of help. I base that on my Catholic morals, the well off should help those who are disadvantaged.

Of coarse this is not the case with companies like AIG and the like.

Good for the collective at the expense of individual is always and ultimately bad for the masses. The lesson taught and learned by virtue of the foundation of the US, and being destroyed by todays liberal progressive socialists

Not if you are a person of faith, as I am.

So in your practice as a physician, do you turn away Medicare and Medicaid patients, violating your Hippocratic oath?

Or do you take the reprehensible money that you don't need anyway?

READ my comment more carefully...MERIT...meaning payment for services rendered based on the quality and efficiency of delivery of said services [[the market model), not purely based on "need"

It sounds to me like your trying to wiggle your way out of being seen as a hypocrite.

How could I be wriggling if my comment on merit preceded the allegation?

Your services may have justified payment but the payment is a burden on the colletive for the support of those indivuals.

You may be earning your pay but you fully accept payment from a system that forces us all to pay to treat individuals.

It appears that your concern ends once the collective is paying you.

First, less than 25% of my practice is from this source, second, when there is no viable alternative, short of changing the system, the only alternate is to refuse the customer altogether. This is not such a crazy idea, and happens to occur in an increasing frequency. However, a government coercive monopoly leaves no choice other than to strike, which, as pressure mounts, will push towards more striking by the producers in the field....Atlas will shrug, not all at once, and not without the failure of all lesser measures to reverse the seizure of individual liberty by government/collectivists.

Thanks for sharing the photographs of my former neighborhood. I like the scale of N. Quad and think it will be sharp when it is brick-clad, but we'll see about its 'crown'.... i fear it will be too similar to the Ford School.

How's the mid-rise on Washington St. near Division looking? Zaragon Place is about as sharp as a modern building constructed on the cheap could look.

Did the 20-ish story development for the Village Corner site get its permits?

I've walked by the new building on Washington at Division on numerous occasions lately, including about a dozens times today. I parked at my friend's law offices for Art Fair. His offices are directly behind it on Huron [[next to the Firestone). It's a pretty nice looking building, not too big or overly imposing. It has some retail on ground floor and apartments designed for multiple use. I got a sales brochure a few weeks ago. The layout of the apartments seems mostly for student renters. There are apartments with 4 and [[I think) 5 bedrooms and multiple baths. If I'd kept it; I'd post the floor plans. Maybe I'll get another. The high rises at South University at the Village Corners are 'on hold' at the moment and may have gone south. The developers/partners began feuding and suing each other. The apartments next to the Bagel Factory and the mud bowl have re-opened and are taking applications for fall. They sat vacant last year. There's another stink brewing over a development called 'City Center' proposed for Fifth Street just south of William. It would take out most of a block of older and historic homes on a beautiful, tree lined, street. Signs opposing it are going up and a website is planned. I walk that block regularly. It would be a shame to level it. It has much character and is completely different than nearby downtown. Coming south on Fifth Street it's like entering a tree tunnel.

Here's a recent shot of 411 at Division and Washington

Just to the right you see a parking lot, which belongs to a two-story professional building. I believe that building has been vacated and will be demolished for an 18 story building housing units similar to 411. You should really start seeing a canyon forming along Washington with North Quad and the apartment building with BWW. A hotel was also in the works diagonally from 411 but I recall there being some dispute about the loading zone needing to knock off a lane of Division.

The City Center project is certainly stirring up a bunch of controversy. Lots of historic houses essentially sitting on a shrinking island of what was once single family homes. The downtown and University are really beginning to push together as density goes up. I wonder if a bunch of houses will be relocated similar to the strategy employed for 411.

Is it any wonder that Ann Arbor is so liberal? Someone else is paying for everything.

Jeeziz K Riste Bats, just shut up. We're having an enjoyable time talking about Ann Arbor and the UoM and you gotta put your nonsense in. Bat out!

Thanks for the beautiful photo Wolverine. I noticed the new signs in the ground floor windows specifying it is student housing. I got another sales brochure yesterday. I'll post some of it if you'd like. I wasn't aware of all the other proposed developments surrounding Washington and Division that you mentioned. I am aware the Huron and Washington corridors were designated a few years ago to be the 'high rise' corridor. I also wasn't aware the North Quad is UoM. I thought it was a private developer. Leaving the facade from the Frieze Building may prove to be pretty 'tacky'. It was, after all, a pretty lousy concession to the pro-Frieze people. I've walked by the new Hill Dining building at MoJo a few times recently. It's very attractive. I'll take a photo to post unless you have one of your own available or one from flicker.

"Your tuition" is subsidized heavily in this public institution, and even if it weren't, these multimilion dollar projects would not be paid for by your [[or anyone's) tuition.

cc, since when did tuition influence U of M's building program? Provide me links to documents. Show me proof, not what you say. I actually know where to find them, I'm just curious if you know how to find them as well.

1KielsonDrive, I actually don't have photos of the Hill Dining Hall. I'd be happy to see them.
