Its a pretty wild idea. I have no idea how containers would be cost effective in an inland port as I would assume that these things would collect at places like Seattle, Los Angeles, Vancouver, or Savannah with much more frequency. There would need to be anticipated transport costs factored in to get each empty container to Detroit.

Containers here arrive by rail, none of the great barges can make it though the Seaway. We also ship a lot of stuff out using those same containers as we are still America's manufacturing center. I suspect the best place to find containers that are at the end of their life cycle would be in a Port City, not here.
