Btw if miserable equated to suicidal, it wouldn't be the list above. Most those cities have very low suicidal rates where the ones Forbes names best 'whatever' have quite the share of different problems.

Just be happy Detroit gets good press from legitimate media sources.
People don't commit suicide because of where they live, they commit suicide due to mental health/depression issues, or personal/financial/family problems.

BTW, what "good" press has the city been getting lately? The two national news stories emerging from Detroit have been:
    1) Impending bankruptcy/state takeover
    2) Kwame's federal corruption trial

Oh, and if you want to count the Auschwitz sign at the Packard Plant, that made national news too for about a day.

I find their reasoning for putting Warren in there a little odd. They said that houses have dropped over 50% in value....that's a lie. Sure, some have, but most are no where near that. My parents live near 12 mile and their house was worth about $200,000 before the market crashed. Last week, a house in the neighborhood that was comparable sold for $130,000. There are tons of cities around where that stat applies, so why did they pick out Warren? Sorta weird. I live in Roseville, my house dropped over 50%, my friend in Hazel Park.... same thing.... and we don't have the tech center of one of the big three in our city.

Your "handle" seems very appropriate based on that comment. Very representative.

To be fair, according to Forbes, they're actually singling out the Warren-Troy-Farmington Hills "metro" [[the three areas are sometimes grouped together by the government). Of course, our local media didn't really bother to correct the false perception that Forbes was keying in specifically on Warren, because then our newspapers would have to admit that virtually the entire market is nationally viewed as "miserable"! You can't have that, can you?

With that being said, the list means nothing on an individual bases. A lot of people here are like yourself and not miserable. Personally, I would never leave unless something happened where I HAD to, but I know people who live in actual real cities like Portland and they say the vibe is much better off than here, but doesn't surprise me.
Their lists are based on random statistics which they never explain how those stats translate into happiness or miserableness. They just pick a random adjective out of a hat and then cherry pick some numbers that usually aren't an accurate measure of the adjective they chose. They come up with a list and then slap it on a web page to generate clicks.

My favorite list is the one about traffic congestion that ranks Detroit much higher than it should be because they measure "congestion" by the amount of time that drivers that a percentage of the population spends driving to their destinations. Commuters in Detroit spend more time in their cars because they tend to live far from their place of employment and also because public transportation is nonexistent. Traffic congestion in Detroit is about as prevalent as public transportation options.

I haven't read Forbes but I agree with you nain rouge. If you stick the point of a compass in the Ren Cen and draw an arc of about 30 miles radius on the US side the whole of the inscribed area is miserable to live in [[and more so outside the 30 miles) and the pall of misery originates from where you stuck the point. We can talk it up as much as we want but it's still what it is. It's a flat drab area supported by a major city that's bankrupt.
