In Lansing we not only burned leaves, but we burned our trash too. Every week we went out to the burner barrel, tossed in the everything and set it alight.

    Whoosh!

I know exactly what you mean about the screen door. That sound always reminds me of my grandmother who lived a few houses down the street from us. Her front door made that sound you described. She would get so mad at me when I slammed the door. She would always say "girl didn't your momma teach you how to close doors." Then she would shake her head.

Trees are the best thing around. You can drive on a so-so architecturally significant street, but if it has a nice canopy of trees, it is a winner. Conversely, while shopping around for a house in the city, I have looked at nice looking streets with fewer trees and it is a total turnoff for me.

We used to burn leaves in Montreal too in the seventies and it has been outlawed for a long time. You can't even have a fireplace installed anymore I think. Only high tech retrofits are tolerated in the city now for people who have an acquired right.

Growing up in BIrmingham, I remember those leaf burning days well. Actually, we were asked to keep the burning low-key and burn the leaves on the apron of the driveway rather than in the curb to let traffic go by without incident.
Every now and then, the fires got a little too high and the pump truck from the Ciry would have to come to the rescue if the garden hose did not do the job.
