Motor City is owned by the Illitch's and is it really bad to have out of state investment?

Well, if you don't mind all those dollars sucked out the local economy and funnelled to Las Vegas never to be seen again, then no, I suppose out-of-state investment in a government-backed cartel is not a bad thing at all.

Back when I was a quasi casino supporter and devotee, I did some short-term mostly off-site promotional work for MGM when they opened the new building and could not gamble there during that assignment.

Due to federal and local gaming regulations employees are not allowed to gamble at the same casinos they work at. Onsite female employers must also carry 'transparent' purses if they work at MGM I know, having a family member working there. Just in case you might steal, they can see the bills thru you purse ----!

I think the other casinos have this policy too. Take a look the next time you see female workers coming off shift!

Oh, and if you wanna work at the casinos most require 'hair' analysis for their drug screening. No urine altering will help... so if you imbibed in the no-no list of stuff you'll not be working there on any level.

It took time to end the habit and while I never gambled away major obligations, mortgages and kids college funds, the self-consciousness of foolishly wasting money and hanging out in the depressing settings finally made me quit.

Also - I know some will argue the point - it seemed the digital slots just stopped paying out as they once did [[within the regulation percentage). This was especially noted at Motor City. MC was not my place [[I was an MGM and Ceasars Windsor gambler) but I heard from other gamblers that Motor City's payout rate was higher on the digital and mechanical slots early on and depreciated greatly over the last 5 years.

Whatever, I just needed to do other things with my money and time on earth.

Casinos are ok in my opinion. Yes, I have known a couple of compulsive gamblers. but like bars, you don't ban something because a percentage of the users can't control themselves. Prostitution and drugs are illegal and there is no shortage of either of those in any big city.

They have created jobs, and offer hotels and restaurants.

I go to a casino maybe once every two years. But it's nice to have a place to stop in and visit when I have out of town or out of the country visitors. If they want to make a stop at one of the casinos I take them there. I also take them to various places like the Fisher and Guardian Bldgs, the art institute, the river walk, Corktown, Mexican Town, etc. It's nice to have the casino option. I have friends visiting from Nashville next week and the wife mentioned that they may want to stop at a casino while they are here. Fine with me.

But I agree with the people who say we have enough casinos, I would not vote for any more in metro Detroit.

Motor City is owned by Marian, not Mike because Major League Baseball bans any association with gambling. What a crock! Pete Rose is banned from baseball, but Mikey's wife can own a casino.

They need to add couple more in Detroit, and people mover stations connecting them all, park and ride so you can casino hop., they are 2 far without trains connecting them.

If you don't like casinos then don't go to one.

Hah! You best have some really long green to do a casino hop of that level. Most casinos can outlast your money--But I guess some people have it like that... As I recall MGM has a 'coin star' machine for the really pressed!------LOL!

Funny you mentioned that... I've often thought that one option for the long mothballed former Washington Blvd. Trolley was to run a track from MotorCity down Grand River with a stop at MGM, then thru downtown over to Greektown and back...with a few stops at hotels along the way.

Gistok, thanks for mentioning the trolley. I always enjoyed riding it on occasion. I miss that trip from the RenCen to the Whitney Bldg. I guess those cars were sold to another city. It would be nice to have them back now with more foot traffic downtown and a hopefully reopening Whitney Bldg. It would be a way for residents of the Whitney and Broderick Tower to go to the RenCen. The lines could conceivably be extended to include a few other stops. It's nice to think about the options.

And cheaper then the proposed Rabid Transit Light Rail. Also it would allow more fexibility.

Well, the trolley was anything but rapid transit, you could walk from the Whitney to the RenCen in almost the same amount of time. Still it had a quaint appeal to it and would be nice to see it rolling along again during big events downtown. Tourists enjoyed them also.

But I think the trolley cars were sold and the tracks removed during the Washington Blvd rebuild a few years ago.

"Well, the trolley was anything but rapid transit"

Very true. But having sat on Woodward, while cars or pedestrians trying to cross from sidestreets blocked me, I don't understand how a light rail is going to get past all that, unless it's elevated.

I think the train station should be made into a casino, what else could we do with that beautiful huge building, and build a hotel next to it , and put a people mover station, especially with our cold winters, also turn the Masonic temple to a casino, just my 2 cents.it would do wonders for the area by the Masonic,

Too bad they did not make the train station into a Casino. That's a great idea! It is a shame how the Greek town Casino is growing like a cancer and devouring Greektown.

Actually people ruin their own lives... they can ask the casino to ban them, and they will be denied entry. Casinos are entertainment for those who are not addiction prone.

Have you ever stood behind folks at 7-Eleven who spend a bundle on Lottery Tickets? Can blame it all on the Casinos. If they don't spend it in Detroit's Casinos, they'd just go to Windsor or Mt. Pleasant.

I actually agree with you, but I have to assume the same people who approve of casinos don't think drugs should be legalized, claiming they ruin lives. Just playing a little Devil's Advocate.

Well, the converse is at least true in me, I advocate for the full legalization of natural substances...and would rather it be tougher for the average gambling addict to get their fix. Because they can get it through Window's Solitaire, if they switch the settings to show dollar-card bets.

I'm not against gambling, I'm against making a shrine to it and inviting those with gaming issues to lose their 'wealth'. If we can allow home-grown weed, and we should have it as easy and free as the tomato marketplace [[nobody considers taxing personal garden production, yet grocery stores sell all the tomatoes they can get from their distributor), then home-grown gambling is no issue to me.

Just don't institutionalize it, and try to get all self-righteous when the whale handlers know they are tickling some poor soul's troubles in order to get their bonuses. There is a reason organized crime is all over the casino business.

    No cheers...

Gannon, old pal, you've been watching DiNero in "Casino" far too much. After they tried to blow up Lefty Rosenthal [[Ace Rothstein in the movie) the mob lost control to the conglamerates like MGM and Wynn. Currently the mob is only involved in areas where gambling is illegal. Hell, the numbers racket was the biggest mob business for years. Now the state runs the lottery and it's legal. Only problem is the state pays 500-1, while the mob paid 600-1. Mob was a better bet.

Anyway, they're pretty much history in gambling. They like the funny stuff much better now.
