When you QUIT a job, you give a week or two notice. When you plead guilty to and are convicted of stealing from that job, you don't get to decide when or how you leave. She does not need a week to get out - she could let go of her staff and clean out her desk in one day. This is showing her far more respect than she showed the city she supposedly loved so much. Cox said he will take action if she's not out by tomorrow, I hope he does. You know she's just going to stick around and make everyone else uncomfortable and raise hell.

Kwame was the MAYOR! That's a far bigger job than being on city council which is basically a glorified pencil pusher, not big deal, obviously, since they barely show up half the time and Monica herself said it was a part time job. Plus at least Kwame had to handover the city to another person to take over, Monica's seat can remain empty, no one needs to take over for her. Big difference.

"if you mean voters, well, i'd like you to tell me when an incumbent under indictment or cloud of corruption allegations HASN'T won re-election or if they did lose, didn't win election to some other post"

Jackie Curry was beat by Janice Winfrey. What was your point?

Monica was doing this when she was in office.

Perhaps you should have mention this to Kym Worthy when she agreed to let Kilpatrick remain mayor for two weeks after he plead guilty. You misread Cox's warning to Conyers. He said if she didn't resign by tomorrow, he would take action. She has resigned. End of story.

Now watch her say that she resigned as Council President pro tem, but not from the council itself.

What about her responsibilities? Should the remaining city council members wing it to understand what she was dealing with? It is never fun to handle someone else's work when they aren't around to explain what is what. If it makes you feel better last year Christine Beatty submitted her resignation yet it was dated two weeks later.

Her letter of resignation states that her staff will be available until December 31, 2009 to assist in the offices of her colleagues.

Can people find ways to drain the city from money, or what?

While much of this makes little or no sense to the "common folk", I suppose it is what it is. She resigned. How she will be removed from her office is a horse of another color. In my opinion, we're all merely looking for some relief from all this crap we've been dealing with for years. I'm certainly no political analyst and don't claim to know the city charter, but with all the bloggers attacking each other, it's not doing any of us any good. If nothing else, we should be banding together to rebuild what our "elected officials" have demolished. And yes, I know I'll take heat for my comments.

    M. Conyers pleaded GUILY AS SIN! Now she have to resign and move this city foward.

Detroit needs NEW LEADERSHIP not leftovers.

So what. The minute she leaves office, her letter means nothing. Some people better start working on their resumes.

between KK and Mon Con, it should be clear now to blksoulx that he's backing the wrong team

She should have security guards on either side of her when she's in City hall. Usually, when a person is convicted of a felony, they don't get the opportunity to go back to the office to "clear out" a few things. If anything, they are escorted to their desk with a cardboard box in tow and can only empty out their personal belongings. How she is so special is beyond me. She can still do a lot of damage in four or five days.

Kind of off to the side, but does anyone remember what James Rosendall, Vice President of Synagro, was charged with and his punishment? I'm trying to see how similar or how different the punishment is for the parties on both sides of a bribe.

Well, since only one of the parties in question was a keeper of the public trust, one would hope that the large pile of bricks in Lady Justice's scale would fall on that one's head.

I actually wasn't making a value judgement either way when I asked that question, but since you injected that into this, I find your view really kind of silly. I'd expect an initiator of a crime to be delt with pretty harshly, too. The council member certainly got what she deserved, for sure. I'm wondering if the briber received a deserving sentence, too. I guess I'll simply go research my own question.

Rosendall, 44, pleaded guilty to bribery conspiracy. He easily qualifies for a five-year prison sentence under federal guidelines, but prosecutors will recommend no more than 11 months because of his extraordinary cooperation with the FBI.

Conspirators to a crime all face the same penalty. It doesn't matter who initiates it. Did he say he initiated it or did you assume that because he wasn't a public official? I've heard that city officials have suggested that potential Detroit investors pay them off, but thats just hearsay and rumor. Does anyone know why the Feds started this investigation in the first place? Rosendall plead after they had him on tape and the FBI is very careful to get good warrants and that requires cause and a description of what they are specifically looking for.
