‘Pregnancy Begins 2 Weeks Before Conception’ Now The Law In Arizona

by DAVID BADASH on APRIL 13, 2012

In Arizona, women are now legally pregnant two weeks before conception, according to a new law, the Orwellianly-named, “Women’s Health and Safety Act,” signed yesterday by Republican Governor Jan Brewer. The scientifically, medically, ethically, and intellectually dishonest legislation is designed to reduce the amount of time a woman is allowed to have a legal abortion, and is one of the most draconian bills to become law in America.

The bill was sponsored by extremist Arizona State Rep. Kimberly Yee, who last month penned an op-ed titled, “No drug test, no welfare.” Yee wrote:

States have an obligation to hold those on public assistance accountable for their actions. Receiving a public benefit is a privilege, not a right. The debate on drug testing welfare recipients is simply about the responsible use of tax dollars.
It’s unclear where in the U.S. constitution it states that the states “have an obligation to hold those on public assistance accountable for their actions.”

Assuming this article is accurate, I have NO issue at all with drug testing welfare recipients. Yes, whenever you turn to anyone for assistance they have a right to place conditions on that assistance. It happens no matter who you turn to. That's just life.

However, on this ridiculous "pregnancy begins 2 weeks before conception" nonsense, that is just stupid and a waste. I for the life of me can't understand why a group that is so concerned with self accountability and abhors burdensome people want to force women into producing more burdensome people. If a woman knows she can't properly care for herself at this moment in time and prefers not to have another person to care for in addition to herself, shouldn't conservatives be applauding her? No, instead they demand she not only pull herself up by the bootstraps, but do it with a baby strapped to her back as well. Completely idiotic and counterproductive thinking on the side of so-called conservatives.

Oh, and one more thing, what's the difference between forcible and non-forcible abortion? Apparently what Todd Akin was referring to in his ill remarks is that if a woman is traumatized enough her reproductive system can become stressed to the point that it does shut down and causes a miscarriage. How is that different from her taking a morning after pill? Either way the conception is not carried to term. This entire abortion debate is retarded.

I'm pro-life, never have supported abortion and never will. However, this issue has already been settled in the courts decades ago. Instead of trying to prevent women from having the ability to obtain an abortion, why don't we as a society work on eliminating the need for a woman to ever have an abortion. The problem isn't the abortion, it's the unwanted pregnancy [[which usually never leads to anything good regardless if an abortion is performed or not).

The unwanted pregnancy is the true problem that needs addressing and that can be addressed any number of ways, yet conservative right to life groups reject every last one of those ways. Instead they settle on a stupid "pull yourself up by the bootstraps with a baby tied to your back" message.

Another point Todd Akin was also trying to allude to is that about 1 - 2% of abortions are from rape/incest cases. This is true and neither side of the political spectrum denies this. Question is, why is the Republican party focusing on trying to shut down this miniscule amount of abortions and ignoring the other 98%? C'mon people, let's get it together.

Very true. These same right-to-life republicans also want to cut funding for pre-natal care and anything that would give a child a hope for a decent, healthy life. You forgot to mention how hard it is to pull yourself up by your own bootstraps is when you don't have any boots

Very true. Let's not also forget these are the same conservatives who cheered during the Republican debates for letting a sick person without health insurance die rather than help them. Would they cheer for letting a fetus die if the mother has no health insurance? No, they'll make an exception for the fetus as long as it's a fetus. Once the baby is born, it's on its own.

It seems it's always about defiance in Arizona, at least moreso than other states. Just consider that smirk on Jared Loughner's mugshot. Or Joe Arpaio's attitude. Or the Evan Mecham embarrassments.

It's as if they're always in a competition to be more defiant than the next guy. Why is that? Could it be that people who live there are preselected for that trait just because it's such a harsh environment? Only the defiant would tolerate that searing desert?

    Sincerely pondering.

AZ doesn't have a monopoly on crazy. Pat Rogers called for removal of the Republican governor in New Mexico for meeting with American Indians - comparing the meeting with Quislings collaborating with the Nazis.
