mjs, You brought out an interesting point I hadn't considered; that the frugal are being rewarded by government for saving while those who aren't able to save, or don't save and are driving around in debt, won't be as able to participate in this program. Just when everyone is starting to wonder what kind of a socialist our new President is, he rolls out this Randian revenge fantasy.

I tell you this, Sure I might be able to trade in my Ranger for a 6cyl Mustang. But who would care if my V8 in the garage replaced that V6.

One thing I've not heard discussed is should this be limited to GM, Ford and Chrysler only. It wont do our auto industry much good for folks to trade their clunkers in for a Toyota or Honda now, will it?

I heard on NPR that congress couldn't put a provision in that makes it exclusively for American cars because it would violate trade agreements. In my opinion, that makes the bill flawed. I don't want to see foreign automakers profiting from our tax money, as we know many still cling to that false notion of poor quality from the domestic automakers.

If you were an auto worker down south or a relative or neighbor, wouldn't you tell your Senator to vote no on a bill that raised your taxes to push others away from your vehicles and into buying cars made in Mexico and Canada? There's no way they could have gotten it while excluding American manufactured foreign name plates. They tried. I guess it all depends on how you define us and them. If your an American working for Toyota, it helps you.
