Actually, not too, too long ago, the Monroe side was mostly occupied. Then, the Indian restaurant and ice cream shop went out of business. Greektown Casino was using one storefront as something linked to their new hotel, and moved out when the hotel opened. The remaining tenants have been told to move by the DEGC, so I presume that means it's coming down relatively soon.

With the increased activity downtown, and the new restaurant[[s?) on Randolph, those storefronts might have been occupied again, if not for the demolition.

yeah, no clue where they will go. I think Greektown and Campus Martius are just about maxed out. I would like to see more bars, restaurants and stores moving down Woodward now between Campus Martius and Grand Circus Park.

The other lonely survivor on that block... the National Theatre is not in great shape... in fact it is in worse shape than the United Artists [[surviving Plasterwork wise). However the city did put a new roof on it about 20 years ago [[too late I'm afraid).

If the National never gets used again as a theatre, then perhaps the facade and Pewabic lined lobby could be reused in some future downtown development. As we've seen elsewhere, building facades can be saved and re-incorporated in larger developments [[hopefully the Fine Arts Building facade can find a similar use).

Although the National is the sole survivor of the former Monroe St. entertainment district... the rather tame surviving parts of the interior [[versus the Art Nouveau/Moorish exotic exterior) works against it.

    Here's some surviving interior shots....

This is in contrast to the very exotic surviving interior of the United Artists Theatre.

lol, I am pretty sure City Slickers just moved down the road a bit. I would think they will fill this space up soon if it is taken down. I'd love them to find a use for the facade of the theatre. If a fresh parking garage or office building is put at this location, I bet the ground level retail will fill up very quickly. The other side of the street is completely full with retail and it is actually refreshing to walk on that part of the street. Are there any plans for the gigantic empty lot across from Campus Martius? That is such an eye sore.

City Slicker just moved a few alligator paces across Randolph. They're in the former, much smaller T-Mobile spot. The Shoe Gallery owner, however, said he was not going to reopen.

    Thanks AGinthe.
I know the addition is part of the new bw3, but what are the plans for the barber shop. Last time down there it looked like they were starting something on it.
