Season Opening of the East Warren Avenue Farmers Market
DETROIT – On June 13, Growing & Retailing Opportunities in Wayne County [[G.R.O.W.) will host the 2009 season opening of the "East Warren Avenue Farmers Market" [[EWAFM). Entering its second year of operation, EWAFM is looking forward to another successful season providing fresh local produce, grown by urban and rural farmers and gardeners, exclusively in the state of Michigan. The market will operate each Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., through the end of September, and will reconvene on October 31st to host the local business association’s Pumpkin Festival. The market is located in East English Village, on the northeast corner of Bishop and East Warren.
EWAFM vendors will include “Grown in Detroit,” Eastern Market’s “A.M. Fresh” Van, local honey and honey products, local art, locally made soaps, baked goods, and more. The EWAFM will also feature on-site recycling on June 13th, as well as every 4th Saturday of the month. Volunteers will be collecting colored and clear glass, cardboard, batteries, and Styrofoam. Project FRESH coupons will be accepted at the market.
G.R.O.W. is an initiative of the Wayne County Food Systems Project. It is funded through the U. S. Department of Agriculture’s Community Food Projects Competitive Grants Program. The project supports community farming and the development of food-related
businesses on Detroit’s east side, and in Highland Park. It provides participants with financial assistance in growing food in their backyards and neighborhoods, and teaches business skills to participants that help them learn to sell what they have grown. The project also develops retail outlets where local growers can sell their produce, and provides information to Detroit area residents on where they can find fresh local produce.
G.R.O.W.’s collaborative partners include Warren/Conner Development Coalition, Wayne-Metropolitan Community Action Agency, Michigan State University Extension-Wayne County, the Garden Resource Program Collaborative, and Rebuilding Communities, Inc. Additional organizational supporters of the East Warren Avenue Farmers Market include Data Educational Services, CEM Business Association, and the East English Village Neighborhood Association.
