I have no problem with cameras. I seriously doubt that the police would even be "monitoring" them unless there was a special event going on or a problem area. From what I understand, cctvs are usually employed as a way to gather evidence, not investigate. I have a friend in London who was attacked while walking to her car and the cctv footage filmed at that corner was a crucial piece of evidence in finding the thug who hurt her. The story from a few months ago of the little boy in Brooklyn who was kidnapped and murdered also comes to mind- the police were able to piece together where he disappeared and who he was with because of the security camera footage.
I know people want privacy, and they don't want to feel like they are being watched all the time, but the system we have now is just not enough. Knowing that you are being filmed might be enough to deter some people from committing brazen acts of violence, and if it is not at least there is a physical record of what happened.
