Thread: Detroit's Faygo

    Default Faygo-Ace

Have seen some old bottles adorned with Faygo-Ace. I've not been able to find anything about that. Where'd the Ace come from? Can anyone help me with this mystery?Name: Faygo Ace.jpg

RC Cola introduces Nehi, Faygo does first brand knockoff, Ace Hi, in taller bottle.

    Default Faygo Remembers.......

What was the boat this was filmed on? As a kid I always assumed it was a Boblo Boat. Looking at this commercial however it appears to be a different boat.

In a Detroit News article it says : a Bob-Lo Island boat
    http://www.detroitnews.com/article/2.../BIZ/703020359

Hopefully you can view the next url if you don't have a Facebook account . It's a Bob-Lo Island Amusement Park FB page that describes your video as a '' Bob-Lo type boat . Maybe a call or email to Faygo may help because I'd like to know , it doesn't look exactly like a Bob-Lo boat in the video

It's neither the Columbia or the Ste. Claire. It almost looks like one of the Diamond boats before the green paint job.

Too big for a Diamond Jack boat. Most of Diamond Jack's boats are retired Mackinaw Ferries. It does look a bit like the Belle. http://diamondjack.com/boats.html

Good idea to contact Faygo. Detroit news is wrong unless Boblo had other boats that were exclusively used from Amherstburg or Wyandotte. I just e-mailed Faygo.

Definitely much smaller than the Columbia and St. Claire, but larger than the Wyandotte boat. Hmmmmmm.......hope Faygo gives the answer.

So far no response from Faygo... Maybe I should have threatened them with dropping them for name brand carbonated beverages?

Not one of the Diamond Jack fleet. The huge exhaust stack on the Faygo ship is amidships - halfway back the length of the vessel. The Jack fleet have exhaust out the back and not the same kind of decking...

It does look a bit like the Belle in the front, but DJ have no big smoke stack like that Faygo boat does...

The best way to find out what boat was used is to find out who the ad agency was. Since this commercial is so old, I doubt anybody is left in Faygo's marketing department to remember.

The spot was done by W.B. Doner.

I believe the Faygo commercial features the SS Badger, the Ludington to Manitowoc Wisconsin car and passenger ferry. The one island in the Faygo commercial looks like a lot of rock, I don't think there are any islands that tall in the Detroit River or NW Lake Erie

It is much smaller than the Badger and the paintwork is different.

I believe this is the gentleman leading the song in the commercial:

Here is what Faygo's website says about the boat:|

Commercials produced in the 1970s featured "everyday people" on an excursion boat singing the "Faygo Boat Song".

Not any boat that I remember seeing around here. Definitely not a rail car ferry.

Most, if not all, boats/ships have their stacks painted in a distinctive manner to show the owner or line that it belongs to. This one has a white stack with a medium blue colored band about 2/3rds the way to the top. There might be a guide showing the various color schemes for Great Lakes somewhere or maybe a site like www.boatnerd.com would have it.

The funnel of the Bob-Lo boats was yellow with a blue band, topped with a black band.

I'd put money on it being one of the Detroit-Windsor boats

A search of boatnerd.com turned up one thread from a few years ago, with no decent answer to this question. A good guess was one of the excursion boats out of Sandusky, OH to Pelee Island or Put In Bay. [[won't let me post a link to that thread in their forum for some reason)

Whos to say that the commercial was even filmed in Detroit?

I would have assumed that it was filmed here. Detroit after all, Detroit is the primary market and home of Faygo, and its ad agencies were still very strong players on that national scene. But you're right, there is little there that ties it to Detroit other than the soda.

I hear the commercial was shot in Panama.

I wish I could effectively search the DY website. This came up a few years back. If I recall correctly, it was definitely not shot in Detroit. I want to say it was Lake George or Lake Champlain in New York state, but I'm not positive.

Anyone better at searching the DY archives?
