    Every urban center in the U.S. save for a handful is less urban and less populated than it was in 1950. The difference is that most sunbelt cities were able to add population through annexation of suburban development.

    Detroit can't; there is absolutely no process under state law for a municipality to annex another municipality. Anyhow why would Detroit want to do this and what good would it do?

    Actually, that's not true. Ann Arbor annexed the city of East Ann Arbor back in the 50s or 60s. The laws have changed in some ways since then but it's still possible for one city to annex another. Voters in both cities would have to approve the annexation. I don't see why either Highland Park or Hamtramck would vote to be annexed by Detroit.
