Soup Kitchen Saloon. Their split pea soup was worthy of a blues song.
Slows has delicious food but it's completely true, it takes too damn long to get your food. I like to make the scene as much as the next girl, but I haven't always got 4 hours for dinner.
Monty's in SCS. I liked their breakfast, the kitchen omelette was probably my fav.
Pagoda, on Morang had good chinese food.
Went to Slows in 2005-6 a couple of times. Pretty good but not that good.
Have to agree with GPCharles, Sparky Herberts had it all. Fine and funky. Another place over on that side of the world was the Sunrise Saloon. Is it still there? Charlevoix ave I think, Jan Lasher ran it, nice guy. Vietnam vet, gaffer.
I miss Music Menu Cafe in Greektown. They had a great beer selection and some great food.
Mr. Mike's on Woodward at Piquette...had the best Greek food---in most instances better than most of the joints in Greektown. Alas the new owners now use the deep frier for most of the menu items.
- The International in Greektown - Gus was the best host ever - Rotisserie chicken was to die for.
- Biff's New Center, but only for breakfast after the bar closed - saved me a few hangovers
- Sparky Herberts - ditto to what others said above
- The Phoenicia - but only when it was in Highland Park
- Johnnies - on Warren but only back in the day in its original location [site of the Subway now] when it stayed open til 4 and the Greek staff occasionally would stop what they were doing, pull out the kerchief and all start doing Greek conga line dancing to Zorba the Greek music.
This is such a cool thread. Unfortunately I am a transplanted Detroiter, but there are so many great memories on this thread, I had to list a few of my own:
Slows - not as good as it once was. They seem to be believing their own hype too much.
Fishbones - stopped in last time I was in D [[last May) and was totally blown away by the lack of quality compared to back in the day. To me, it's no longer there.
Hellas - the ONLY Greek restaurant in Greektown.
Sanders - the one in the building next to the Penobscot. Went to lunch there at least twice a month.
Schnelli's Deli - great corned beef.
Woolworth's cafeteria, if only for the memories of childhood.
The Rhino - it didn't burn down, it closed in hopes of the casino's that were never built there.
Franklin Street Brewing Co - read previous sentence.
Farrell's - if only for "The Trough."

HONORABLE MENTIONS:
I know they were clubs but I had to stick these in: the bar that was outside on top of Trapper's Alley [[can't remember the name), and the 20 Grand.
I've never been there, but it almost seems impossible for them to live up to all the hype. I've read countless articles like this one that mention having to stop at Slows. I've also seen them mentioned on best of shows on the Food Network numerous times. From what I've seen and heard about them I can't help but feel like I'd be let down if I ate there.
One of the reasons that I haven't gone there is that I have the patience of a two year old and the idea of waiting to get a table isn't my thing.
Milroy's was so good. I used to go to Marcus Hamburgers with my dad after the junk yard.
Good news on the B-C. A former employee is re-opening the place this month, under a different moniker.Cyprus. My daughter cried when we saw the "Goodby to our loyal customers" note on the door after they closed unannounced, Even more heartbreaking because of the hole in the ground [[literally) that used to be Hellas.
Hellas, even though I stopped going there once I discovered Cyprus

From what I understand, Via Nove in Ferndale is run by the former proprieter of Il Centro.
I have to weigh in on Good Girls as well.
I'd like to take a suburbanite to a business lunch there tomorrow but automatically ruled GG out because of the 45 minute wait. I know it is not fast food as the sign so bluntly indicates, but 45 minutes? I waited less time than that for homemade pasta at Giovannis, for Christ sake - and a romantic Italian dinner Good Girls ain't.
I too appreciate what Torya has done and the success it is there but 45 minutes is just unacceptable. I can't go there for lunch anymore. Soon the novelty to the suburbanites[[they ain't gonna drive down from Rochester every day) will wear off and the rest of us who have been conditioned to not going there because we don't feel like taking a vacation day won't be going there either.
I attributed it to being accustomed to Detroit style BBQ, but Slow's was not good at all. I went there in 2006 or 2007. I was dissapointed. I am glad it retains and draws money and interest to the city though. Perhaps another type of restaurant could be opened, people would give it a chance because of the ownership.
I'm really glad Slow's is as popular as it is and the good it brings to the city, but I'm not personally a fan of the food.
no place is worth a 2 hour wait. with the exception of last month, i've been there 3 times in the last couple of years and have left because of the wait. i had the pulled pork, which was really good, but i can do the same at home. the waiter was very nice but took forevvveerrr to get our bill. fun place to hang out but you end up spending $$$ on drinks waiting for a table.
Sid's on the River in Algonac.
Turtle Soup in Greektown.
Anyone remember a place called La Marmet? I'm not even sure I'm spelling it correctly, but it was on Jefferson, across from the RenCen and next to Dumachel's. The place was dark and rather mysterious. Only there a few times and then one day it just disappeared, torn down and replaced by a disguised parking garage.
Am I remembering this right, or has time altered my reality?
Pasqualli's on Woodward had good Italian.
always had to flag the bartender down too. never once did he ask if we needed anything.
I love Slow's. I think it's worth the wait. I like when driving by I see it all parked up...I feel that way about a lot of the newer businesses in the city....I wish them all the best. But I really miss the Brooklyn Grill...is it going to re-open?
