Love it! Had some foreign guests in town this weekend and they didn't get the "pointe" or "hills" thing. We went to Great Lakes Crossing & they asked "Why is this called Auburn Hills? There are no hills." I explained it's an American way of trying to look/sound important. They weren't impressed with Auburn Hills at all, but LOVED Detroit - city of! We're going back on Saturday for more!! YAY Detroit!

Whenever I'm in the US Midwest, I usually say "Windsor, Ontario". I've found that the majority of people know where it is. Those that don't usually say something stupid like 'oh cool, I've been to Niagara Falls before'. If I'm asked where Windsor is, I say that it's across the river from Detroit [[rather than saying it's 4 hours southwest of Toronto).

But when I was in Texas earlier this year, I just said I'm from "Canada". Just saying 'Ontario' is tricky because some people might think it's Ontario, California.

Well, that breaks down to a semantic point. Even if Hamtramck touches Highland Park, both remain surrounded by Detroit. Granted.

My wife is the same way. She always yells at me when I say "Detroit" instead of "Warren, Michigan" or "Michigan".

I'm proud that I'm from "Detroit".

When I am out of state or in Europe I always claim to be from Detroit. Everyone understands that - if someone needs more specifics I tell them what suburb I live in. Most of my life I lived in the city of Detroit, so for me it's habit.

Besides there are not many suburbs of any metropolitan area that most out of towners know. A few suburbs like Miami Beach, FL, Plano, TX and Arlington, VA are very famous, but overall people think in terms of metropolitain areas.

In recent years the negative stereotype of Detroit has improved, when I say I'm from Detroit people are now aware that it is a great place in many ways as well as one of the worst cities in the US. More people are now aware that there are two sides of the Detroit - and nowadays they are familiar with some of the postives such as the Motown museum, the DIA, the Henry Ford, the casinos, etc. The conversation does not permanently focus on crime , race, and urban blight like years ago.

Same with my wife and me. I say "Detroit" and my face says "You got a problem with that?"
