Rest in Peace. I heard he was a really good guy, that got blamed for a lot of D.P.S. woes. My condolences to his family.
You know what? He really was. I couldn't stand the media caricature of him as a DPS teacher, and did NOT think highly of him at all, because I blamed him for the wave of layoffs in 04-05 that cost me my job.
Then I ended up meeting and befriending him through a mutual colleague when we were both at the University of Michigan. He was truly a kind, knowledgeable person who did far better as an educational leader outside of Detroit than he did while living here.

It just sucks that he had to go from complications of a relatively easy surgery. During his leadership, I was also laid off [[my first layoff notice from DPS). Like English, I was not thinking highly of him, at the time. Everyone I spoke with, who knew him personally, liked him a great deal. My condolences to his family.
I remember when Archer brought Burnley in to run DPS. It's too bad that he had to pass as a result of knee surgery. RIP
I did notice he was the superintendent of the Mat-Su school district which is the region in which a losing VP candidate is from.
I remember his first speech at the Mackinac conference: "the main thing is to keep the main thing the main thing."
