...why do private companies get to own train tracks nationwide.. the federal government should own them all.. high speed rail-inter-city rail will get nowhere with constant negotiations/roadblocks dealling with the freight companies whims.. ah, well..

I don't know how well that would work. Then nothing gets done with freight either, and you end up having frustrated shipping agents moving from rail to trucks, pounding the interstates even more. These private rail companies spend billions every year. Norfolk Southern for example planned $2.2 billion this year alone from track and terminal work. CSX...$2bn, BNSF $3.5bn,, CP $1.05bn, CN $1.5bn The feds arn't going to do that....ever.
And, what do the feds do about Canadian Pacific and Canadian National? The US government can't own them, they might be able to tell them to get the hell out, but that's probably it. Plus they each own a nice chunk of railway companies and hundreds, if not a few thousand route miles in the United States.


Maybe the better idea would be freight companies reintroducing their own passenger services again?
