Zads, I thought the field dimensions were being sacrificed, too--to make room for the other parts of the development [[housing, retail), I assume, no?
All this Lionel talk, sigh. I much prefer American Flyer [[Gilbert) trains...for one, they operate on two-rail track, not the goofy three-rail that Lionel had.
I posed this same question at this site some time ago. If memory serves it wasn't received all that well, as in "How can you question Willie?" Alas, it seems Willie is the only "witness" to his being...
I watched this last night and found it interesting and entertaining. In fact, I was glued to it. Thank you, Ray, for sharing this.
I looked into the Penn Central era and TERMINAL seems to be the preferred designation for the W. Vernor tower.
The Nov. 1969 Northern Region Telephone Directory calls it the Penn Central...
I checked 1963 New York Central timetables, both employee and public, and the terms "Michigan Central Terminal" or simply "Terminal Building" were used for this facility, at least at that time.
All, I'm seeking a photo of Berry Gordy's short-lived 3-D Record Mart. This was at 588 Farnsworth, an area that has since been redeveloped. Can anyone help?
I hear ya! Shortly after the Copa opened I pegged its "lifespan" at 30-35 years. I'm still holding to that.

Sabina's in Melvindale, on Oakwood, just east of Allen Road. It seems to always be busy so consider yourself warned.
Ringling Brothers still travels by train--they have at least two train sets, their "Blue Train" and their "Red Train".
I consulted the Michigan concert database site. They indicate that the "Four Together World Hunger Concert" was held at Olympia on 10/15/77. They list the final concert at Olympia as 10/24/79 when...
From what I have gathered there were no events at Olympia following the final Red Wings' NHL game there on 12/15/79. The one exception was the "Last Hurrah", an exhibition game between the then...
Dexlin, the section from a Sanborn map posted above offers greater detail than the diagram I mentioned in the Trains magazine article. But if you are interested in the article itself it may be worth...
Dexlin, see the August 1978 issue of Trains magazine which contains a feature article on MCS. Within is a nice and clean track diagram of the station area. There might be enough detail there to suit...
Interesting topic, at least the original subject. I'm a Riverview native and, in the 1970s, played Little League Baseball at the fields directly across Colvin Street from this large fenced in area....
From WXYZ:

The fire was suspicious in origin? Really?
Another loss. I kick myself for not taking a photo...
I heard on WWJ this morning that an abandoned florist building on Fort Street near Dearborn Avenue burned last night or this morning. I assume this was the former Smoke Brothers business. With that,...
For next time, print out the .pdf at this site and keep it in your camera bag:

This has gotten the thumbs up at various railfan message boards.
I went poking around this area this morning to see if indeed the Fort Street ramp is still with us. I am happy to report that it still lives, such as it is. The 2009 Google Street View matches the...
I didn't expect this to be a popular subject but as an historian or at least an amateur one, I'm striving for accuracy. As I've not been able to find anyone to substantiate this happening I've grown...
I too really want to believe Willie. He was one of my heroes while growing up in the 1970s. I'm just looking for confirmation other than Willie's own words. Surely some witness has spoken about...
I've read and heard this about Willie's direct involvement in the 1967 riots in excerpts such as this:
During the 1967 Detroit 12th Street riot, he tried bravely to restore peace. He stood in his...
My mom grew up on Beatrice Avenue, just a bit north of this area. I asked her about this housing and, to my surprise, she remembered it. She said they were called "The Projects" and as kids, they...
