I mentioned this earlier in this thead... but I wouldn't mind it if Blue Cross of Michigan moved entirely into the RenCen [maybe Tower 100 in addition to Tower 500, or take 2 of the big towers], and...
An article in Crain's today about the 500 Tower of RenCen was sold... I assume to Blue Cross, but I could not get past the Paywall.
^ Although we all have anecdotes about people with a masters degree working at book stores, I can relate to some of your comments.
I am rather appalled that schools want to eliminate cursive......
^ I can't speak about the 3rd building farther from downtown, but the Blenheim Apartments [stick built] went from being occupied to being mothballed relatively quickly... no scavengers got in, and it...
^ Kudos to companies like this! Seeing if there is a market for this type of development. And choosing to pick the adjacent street to Indian Village makes it much more appealing.
My biggest fear...
It's not much different than private industry... where corporations pay their employees tuition to continue their college education. That money isn't from a corporations largesse... but from their...
^ The Fox has the largest unsupported theatre balcony in the world, with a 170 ton girder that spans the long distance from side to side. When C. Howard Crane designed the Fox in 1927, he knew what...
The Tuller had the same issues as the Fine Arts Building... namely it was wood trusses [or as we like to say for the underwhelming apartments currently on the Statler site... "stick built"].
I...
Maybe this will answer some of your questions... 500 Tower has a long term lease with Blue Cross... but the 600 Tower is the one with problems.

In previous posts on this thead I mentioned that the surviving remnants of the lobby to the former Oriental Theatre became PAO Asian Restaurant.
Well now it seems that those movie palace remnants...
Here is an early 20th century art rendered postcard of West Grand Circus Park from the early 20th century. It will be nice to see the street wall fill up again with a project on the Fine Arts/Shurly...
^ I'm not even sure what this all means??
Let me put this into laymen's terms... both Gilbert and Ilitch get taxpayer money for their development...
Gilbert fixes buildings up and...
Also... somewhere in the bowels of DYES archives is a 20+ year old thread talking about Mike Ilitches "Agora" [Greek/Macedonian for marketplace]... his idea to turn the 1 block closed section of W....
You forgot to mention "festoon lighting"... when I looked that up it mentioned "light bulbs strung along". :o
I am just as skeptical as you are... after all the Detroit Life Building has been a...
^ As Lowell said... the Blenheim Apartments is not in bad condition, unlike most Ilitch owned [poorly maintained roof] properties. And its' location is adjacent to the Columbia St. "festivites"...
With the opening of the Huntington Bank Tower on Woodward, this is the only parcel of land available on that block... and unlike the Huntington Tower, the Fine Arts parcel fronts Grand Circus Park.

It looks like the mothballed facade of the Ilitch owned Fine Arts Building [formerly the entrance to the Adams Theatre] on W. Adams [west Grand Circus Park], and the red Blenheim Apartments building...
Funny when talking about famous architecture... no modern building has paid for itself in tourism as much as the Sydney Opera House.
But even though it is a tourist attraction extraordinaire... it...
Look at the bright side... Belle Isle will have, as its' German named street says... "Inselruhe"! :o
You probably have been left spellbound by all those crushed cans looking buildings. Have you checked out any of the lawsuits and building problems his "innovative designs" have produced? Innovative...
Well then, if he is anywhere near as good as your hyperbole of him, then maybe... ;) but yes he is very good.
I had never heard of him before this "thread"... but then again, I'm just a boomer. :)
Yes... my exact thoughts!! The Detroit Opera House conversion of the former Capitol Theatre cost $42 million back in 1991-98... and that was a much larger venue. They replaced 90% of the ornate...
Looks like the Music Hall expansion is a go... $125 million...

Now if this guy came here to kick things off at the concert at the 6.6. 2024 concert at Michigan Central Station... it would be more newsworthy on DYES...
