I think that America, including Michigan, is controlled by capitalism instead of being controlled by common sense. These corporations dont want to lose money and probably persuaded the Governor not to order a "Shelter in Place" for the whole state of Michigan. The Governor only ordered the places of entertainment and restaurants yo either close or do carryout only. A Sh erlter in Place would mean that the factories, offices, and warehouses would have to close. That would affect corporate from not making a profitI don't understand why they don't just shut everything down immediately. Have everyone self-quarantine for 2-3 weeks. I mean everything except police, fire, health care, etc. Just get it over with instead of letting all these local authorities decide as it continues to spread. Isn't that the best way to stop it and wouldn't it be better for everyone, including business, airlines, etc.?

And affect the ability of the state to pay out welfare, fix roads, pay for police and fire, schools, senior benefits, food-stamps etc, etc, etc.
Johns Hopkins study from 2 days ago shows that 86% of people who get Covid-19 don't even know it [[and so are unlikely to be in the groups of people tested so far). So it's likely that you have to multiply the 0.9% - 3.5% death rate by 0.14 to get the true rate,.. which [[if true) would make it between 2/3 as deadly as the annual flu, to 2.5x as deadly.
Annual deaths from flu number in the 1/4 million to 650,000 range. yet in 3-4 months we've been tracking Covid-19, the deaths are only in the low 8,300 range, or about 1.2% of the FLU death toll in 2018.
Time will tell,.. but I have a sneaking suspicion that the media is just doing what it does best. Sensationalizing for fun and profit.

If you read what I said, my argument for closing everything a couple of weeks ago was that it would be better for everybody - including business to shut things down completely for 14 days to shorten the pain. It's coming to that now, albeit in slow motion.I think that America, including Michigan, is controlled by capitalism instead of being controlled by common sense. Its a bit more complex then turning out the lights and going home, they have to do it in a staggered manner.
Imagine the pandemonium if they said, okay tomorrow 10 am is the deadline for everybody to be at home and not leave.
There are still many that have not stocked up with food supplies, soup kitchens, the ones that keep the power, water and internet on.
There are 10,000s over the road truckers that are probably weeks away from their destination, millions of internet orders that are out there going through the process, some are essential medications that were ordered etc.
Tons of fresh produce out there that needs to be dealt with because it will be rotting within a few days.
They announced the Canadian / US border closures to non accessional personal, imagine stopping every vehicle to do that.
Even in complete lockdown you still have medical, police, fire and emergency services, government worker in the thousands etc.
Great Lakes Tissue to have toilet paper sale at warehouse WednesdayCheboygan is too far to drive for most around here but maybe it will reduce local demand indirectly. Someone should truck it to Detroit and sell it there.CHEBOYGAN — In an attempt to make things a little easier and help ease the toilet paper shortage in the area, Great Lakes Tissue Company will be having a toilet paper sale Wednesday, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m....
At the sale, there will be a five case per person limit on the purchase of the toilet tissue. Limits on the purchase are subject to change and the quantities of available materials are limited.
A case of 96 rolls of unwrapped tissue can be purchased for $21. A case of 96 rolls that are wrapped can be purchased for $22.25 and a 96 count case of premium bath tissue can be bought for $24.25.
A 12 count of jumbo roll of toilet paper, which is 750 feet of toilet paper, can be purchased for $12.50 and a 12 count of jumbo roll of toilet paper with 1,000 feet of tissue can be purchased for $15.75 each.
All of these prices are per case, with tax included in the price. The Tissue Company will be accepting cash and check only for the tissue purchases.
If all the materials are sold out during this event, a similar event will take place the following Wednesday.
It's so silly that this is even a problem. The virus itself isn't going to create an increased need for toilet paper. The future toilet paper demand will plummet while hoarders slowly deplete their bloated inventory.
Idiocracy comes to mind.
^ if it is anything like after a hurricane scare, how many are going to be saving their receipts and standing in line to return it after it passes.
I can imagine years down the road at estate readings,to my devoted son I leave 2700 rolls of toilet paper that was acquired before the corona virus of 2020.
GM / Ford / Chrysler are shutting down their production.
Just announced on CNBC...
I don't know. There's a lot more sh**t flying around since this thing started.Great Lakes Tissue to have toilet paper sale at warehouse WednesdayCheboygan is too far to drive for most around here but maybe it will reduce local demand indirectly. Someone should truck it to Detroit and sell it there.

Fun pleasure and event commitments in America and all over the world will be cancelled. So remain in your homes, wait, watch and pray the pandemic away.
Just announced.
I assume their access to online casinos will remain open.

There you go, Ray.

That YouTube counter is creepy.
I would really hope that our Medical Professionals think independently of the media, so I can't imagine it can all be chalked up to them.
Can you give a link to your John Hopkins study?
Infection rates must be much higher...
Was watching an interview of a Colorado senator this morning. He was alerted to the fact that he had met / shaken hands with someone infected. So he self-quarantined. A few days later he got tested, and was positive for it. Still feels perfectly fine, but is staying in for a few more days as a precaution. [[Can they let him vote on bills remotely in this rare instance?).
This sort of thing is good and bad news. Good in that the vast majority of people will get through it with no suffering,... and bad in that it's much harder to get people to self-quarantine when they have no reason to suspect they are infected.

Sadly the inevitable has has happen.
https://www.freep.com/story/news/loc...an/5054788002/A man in his 50s died early Wednesday morning at a Beaumont Hospital in Wayne County as a result of complications from COVID-19, the disease caused by novel coronavirus, according to Beaumont Health.
“It is with great sadness that we saw our first casualty of COVID-19 in Michigan. ... Our hearts go out to the family and friends who are surviving the man who passed away today,” said Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.

Any explosion of cases has more than doubled Oakland County's number to 59 cases.

Yea, good in that the mortality rate has to be lower and most people can work through the virus. Bad, in that this thing can get to the most vulnerable more easily and possibly overwhelm our health care system.
I don't have the JH study but do have their link to this chart... the red dots are getting bigger over time in some areas. You can click on them for more info, etc. https://coronavirus.jhu.edu/map.html
I subscribed to John Hopkins for daily updates. Good info. Here’s the link to subscribe.

Virus [[if that's what it is) has been spreading through out the world for about 4 months. At this point, less then 10,000 deaths world wide. Experts are saying there could be hundreds of thousand [[some say millions) of deaths in this country, where we have the best health care in the world. I'm starting to wonder about this, it's starting not to add up.
There is something in this statement that is amiss.Virus [[if that's what it is) has been spreading through out the world for about 4 months. At this point, less then 10,000 deaths world wide. A relatively small percentage of Americans have access to the best healthcare in the world; a large number of you do not.
That's the 10-13% who are uninsured, its the 25-35% who are under-insured [[for whom deductibles or co-pays represent and unaffordable burden, so they don't care the care they need); its also those on medicaid, not accepted at every doctor's office or in every clinic......its also those whose geography or mobility [[small town or no car) that impairs access to leading edge care.
Yes, the U.S. has some of the world's best hospitals. But they aren't available to every American, or even for most.
That's not a screed or anything smug, we up here have our own problems, including with healthcare.
Its merely making the point, that American exceptionalism "We're number one" is the biggest limiting factor on fixing problems and shortcomings.
My workplace sent us home last Friday to wait out the storm, paid, even the part timers, like me. My husband, who is 78 took a leave of absence, unpaid, from Meijer. So far no symptoms but at his age schlepping carrots for the masses is not a great idea. So we're home, overeating, and watching a lot of coronavirus coverage on the talking box.Was watching an interview of a Colorado senator this morning.
