Ferndale, Detroit to host meeting addressing concerns over Woodward and 8 Mile intersection

DETROIT [[WXYZ) — People living nearby the intersection of Woodward and 8 Mile tell 7 Action News it has been a spot for the homeless and littering for quite some time now. “It hasn’t just started it’s been that way for years,” said Maria Dickerson, a resident. Dickerson has lived in the Green Acres neighborhood for the last 29 years, and is the president of the local homeowners association.

She says over the years she has fielded questions and concerns from neighbors about the intersection. “Our neighbors should be able to walk across the street to go to Meijer or any other stores in that gateway plaza, without fear, their kids should be able to walk through there without seeing any type of drug paraphernalia on the ground,” said Dickerson. For the first time, the cities of Ferndale and Detroit are teaming up to host a Zoom meeting to address some of those concerns. Part of the meeting will present ideas on how to improve the intersection. “

So the approach to beautifying the intersection is really adding more lighting and making it feel more comfortable to go through the intersection,” said Mayor of Ferndale Melanie Piana. There is still not word yet on when any type of construction of the intersection would take place. There are also plans for both cities to get together to provide help for the homeless, providing social services for those in need. “Art and lightening would be great, people want to be safe walking to the store making sure that they are safe community and that is important, but we also need to make sure that we are taking care of the homeless people that need a place to live,” said Keith Ferguson who lives in the Green Acres neighborhood.

Art and lightning is the best they can come up with. What a joke. How about redesign it entirely? Make it more pedestrian friendly and plant some trees. Nobody cares about art on the side of a busy road.

It just needs to be cleared out, first and foremost.

I drive in the area often and can't imaging setting an foot down to walk past or thru that. I do think better lighting would be useful though.

They just have to decide to.

I often see the police stopping and chatting with the panhandlers,.. but never removing them.

It looks terrible under that overpass.

We don't want to become like D.C. or Seattle.

I drove by that corner about 4 weeks ago and I can't believe how things have escalated. It looks like they've settled in for the long haul. Years ago you'd see one or two guys sitting on those corners panhandling with signs. It now looks like a small homeless encampment. Some high powered lighting under the vydock might do the trick, or else it would encourage more settlement. I agree, I'd be uncomfortable walking through there during the day let alone at night.

That intersection will need to be completely redesigned to be walkable

Well we can always bring up the extremes [[tossing someone in the river etc) so as to do nothing. And we don't a full-out set like parts of downtown Atlanta and San Fran. I wouldn't walk thru that as it is now.

As it stands now it's escalating; a mean-life as they're robbed, beaten, exposed to elements, and often very sick. It can't be sanitary on ANY LEVEL. Especially in light of C-19. For those who mentally ill they need medical intervention. And temporary lost-cost housing for those who can maintain a household. I wonder what NSO [[Neighborhood Service Org) is doing with that property purchased a few years ago on Oakman Blvd [[the Yellow Page building).

It was to be low-cost/ temporary shelter/ housing?

First off, I don't recall anyone suggesting murder and disposal. Secondly, people live in that area, have homes, families, kids, etc., and don't appreciate the encampment in their neighborhood. They have a right to a nice, safe, walkable neighborhood too. If you feel that strongly about it, pick them up and invite them to setup in your neighborhood. Maybe in your yard? I'm sure they'd appreciate the offer and not take advantage of your situation. Be proactive.

It actually is a walkable underpass, its just the homeless problem has escalated and it now looks undesirable to even walk pass. Planting trees and shrubs will look nice for the first year or two at the intersection but who will be responsible for the upkeep. The state of Michigan barley maintains cutting the high grass in the middle islands of both 8 Mile and M-1. Compared to the underpasses at 8 & 75, or Telegraph & 96 [[where homelessness isn't a factor), the 8 & Woodward intersection is getting out of hand.

I drove by today and seen at least 5 people and more boxes and trash. Not even a year ago I would only see 2 people at the most and they would sweep the area and keep it clean. I agree that the area needs to be cleared for good but these people need help.

I visited Google street view to try and remember back when this first started to become problematic. In 2009-2011 there was no homeless in sight. It seems as if the homeless started to gather there around summer of 2012 [[during the construction of the new Meijer and shopping center)

Update: Last weekend I drove by the underpass heading to Meijer and noticed that for the most part it's cleared out. Probably owing to the bitter cold weather. There was only a bit of trash remaining.

Interesting heading south on Woodward I noted, full-view an 'open' standing garage door of one of those newer connected homes just north of Woodstock [[backed to east-bound Eight mile) stuffed chocked-full of old shopping carts, blankets, stuffs, plastic bags, chairs and what not from what was originally UNDER the Eight mile over-pass! I drove back around to verify and it's the third unit garage! The others pulled down closed/ secured. I saw no persons -- perhaps that unit is empty and broken into? In any event the adjacent owners/ renters are not going to allow this, or are allowing it?

Years ago we had an retched old van and at one point a homeless man took to sleeping in it. We had to stop it as he was making it unusable. But it was so sad, especially as winter was soon coming.

All three townhouses are at least 4 years behind on Detroit Property Taxes subject to foreclosure. If it is vacant it will be an eyesore for the folks in Greenacres. One other garage looks like a part of the door has been bashed in in addition to garbage gathering around the back. The blight from 8 and Woodward seems to be slowly spreading.

Green Acres is one of the nicest neighborhoods in the city and the dirty motel across the street has been converted to apartments. Both sides of 8 Mile in this area is fine. Saying the blight is spreading is a little hyperbolic.

^^^ Right. This particular strip of homes is apparently having problems, but over all Green Acres, Sherwood Forest, Palmer Woods, Detroit Golf Course Community etc. remain pretty strong, overall.

It's the EAST SIDE of Woodward and Eight that's hit [[the actual housing stock is not even comparable). That's a crucial distinction.

I'd not care to live within 50 miles of that intersection. Just sayin'.

I have family that had property along the west side of the Detroit Golf club. It was a good life at a certain income level with some homes averaging about 2,600+ sq ft - plenty of trees and grass. Ala the club lawn mowers going at 6 AM on the greens [[joy). I still like to drive thru there [[and especially Palmer Woods) just to see the styling and architecture of some of these homes.

Yep, that's the back end of the units - garage door open where some of the belongings of the homeless persons are stuffed.

Whoever own those three condo units either some homeless folk[[s) let themselves in to squat. Or some reckless home owner let them in to stay for the moment.

By the way the one of three condo units is livable with the homeowner inside. And that homeowner will make sure those snoopy folks in that ghetto hood don't call the block club folks or the Detroit Police.

The Ferndale side of the Woodward Bridge Overpass is all cleaned up. Either the folks in Ferndale called the police or Michigan State Police to let the homeless folks know it can not make a home under that walkway. And the piles of trash that street rat left behind in the walk way is all clean up by the City of Ferndale.

But there is still trash lying on the Detroit side of the Woodward Bridge Overpass. It's up to City of Detroit or Michigan State Police to take care of the problem.

Now when the weather warms up the street rats will be back to their panhandling business and leaving their trash all over the Woodward Overpass. That is why drastic measures must be taken so that people and the traffic can flow through that area. Give those homeless folks shelter now!

Detroit needs to deal with its side of the underpass for certain.

This weather is quite horrid. Another reason why I rarely complain about our 'few' hot summer days. Sure heat can kill, but nothing like harsh winters if you're exposed outdoors.

The middle unit is the one you speak of, I believe it just recently caught fire during Covid. Now why the neighboring owner or tenants of the left and right are not bothering to close the garage door is beyond me. Who knows?

All of Detroit is a ghetto hood. Does matter if the once Detroit middle class blue to white collar neighborhood is full of houses or not. There are always going to be riff raffs pushing drugs, pimps doing prostitution and sex trafficking. Gangs are everywhere. They don't have to show their colors. They are in plain clothes and they don't need to be visible in groups to lure cops. Homelessness are visible and most them are in the panhandling business. And if they want shelter, they can just squat in people's homes. It's legal under Squatter's Law. The home owner will have to get a court order to kick the squatter out.

I grew up in Detroit all of my life. I like the stink of the streets. I love the smell of it. If most of you from suburbia want to find out the read ghetto hood of Detroit, don't look the internet go right into it, cruise and hopefully you don't get robbed, shot and attack by rabid wild animals.

Detroit still has homes, businesses and historical areas that for protected. Even through gentrification is here and poor folks are kick out and private developers want to turn Detroit's stink of streets into their personal Disneyland for millennials. The memories of Detroit ghettos will still be in minds.

Something that strikes me having grown up in Detroit [[no, not within city limits), and for most of my life since then lived in cities on the East coast, is how comparatively few homes in Detroit have bars on their windows. Even in those "worst areas." In most East coast cities, and all the big ones, most homes have bars on every ground floor window [[often higher) and near every fire escape. Even in the "best areas."

On the flip side, in most East coast cities most parents [[not all) have comparatively little fear their children will die by a gun. I know several who were killed in "good" Detroit suburbs not by a criminal but with a gun in their home, or their friend's.

I used hang out and lived in the ghetto hoods of Detroit for all of my life. Even when the hoods are nice and stable. There are always riff raffs, running about. Otherwise the gentrification developers pick up their litter, build their super condos and McMansions and kick out the poor.

You seen it happen from Gilbert town Detroit, Brush Park and Cass Corridor.

Most Detroit homes have bars on the windows, mines too, but they are usually on the inside of the home instead of the outside. It is very easy to get the security bars off of windows that are on the outside and it does not make the home look visually as nice from the street. We definitely have them on our windows, just on the inside and not seen on the outside, If that answers your question.

One rental had some that were almost rusted through--
Had not been a safe neighborhood for a while--
So those maybe, noisily, only maybe.
No burglar could have known without inspection;

I responded to every so called gang you posted and have come to the conclusion that you are speaking on things you don’t know about. I don’t know if you ever lived in the city or not but you clearly don’t live here anymore by your comments. You sound angry at the city and I hope you find peace within yourself. Because almost everything you posted sounds like you live in another country and was mislead from Youtube videos created by people who never even been to Detroit. Please stop trying to paint Detroit as a gang city when it is not we have a bad enough rep as it is. I live here and I’m in these ghettos you speak about every single day, so either go outside or tap in with someone who is.

Then you don't know all about me. Those are real Detroit gangs. Some were historic and long gone and others still around. Don't be fooled by their names. In fact they can call themselves a gang, but some of them end up as cliques or a community socialist revolutionaries like the Vice Lords, Black Panthers or the even White Panthers!

I grew up in Detroit all of my life. Half of family were in the gang mostly my first cousins. Glad I didn't join otherwise my parents will spank me until I grow up. Growing up the ghetto hoods of Detroit during the crack and heroine epidemic to exposing government conspiracies has led me realize what our American society has become a division between rich and poor. And this nation still can't shake off the rich-poor wars.

I know most of the Detroit through stories is from my family members before America Online and YouTubes. Some of my cousins grew up in broken homes, educated schools and getting bullied and beat up in the streets and end up in jail. One was killed by a drug dealer and other spend life in prison for murder. Today most of my cousins are out of the Detroit gangs, got married, went back to school got educated and some went to military and into college or work trades. And most of them moved out of Detroit and into other suburbs and states for a better life. Because they don't want to be in prison or dope addicts for rest of their lives. Prison and death of their homies has changed them. And I'm glad that some of them has done it for their families that they struggle racism and discrimination so that their kids can live the American Dream.

I grew up in stink of the streets of Detroit all of my life. I walk through those hoods hopefully I don't get shot day or night. I ran into fights in schools to the streets. I deal with folks holding knifes and holding me up in gunpoint. I was robbed in Detroit several times from a young kid to an adult.


Therefore you have no ideal what my life in Detroit was like until you step in my shoes.

I don’t care about your war stories, you’re family’s life seems like most in the city to me. My question is do you live here now? I do. So what you’re speaking on from the 80’s has nothing to do with what’s currently going on right now.

Your argument isn't compelling enough for me Danny to justify calling Detroit a Ghetto Hood. I'm not over-sensitive; easily triggered or ever-ready to site micro-aggressions, etc. However, I find this name-calling a bit slow, and but another form of reductionism of places and people.

I'm not an apologist for the problems or Detroit, especially certain areas. But summarizing the city as a 'ghetto hood', especially beyond discussing buildings and houses presents one more framework that negates the personhood of Detroiter's at a collective level. Another push towards reductionism.

I'm not feeling that. These are difficult times - and I see no value in further dehumanizing our communities with canards like 'Ghetto hood'.

This simplification of complex issues [[advanced also in part by the labeling and name calling in politics) is strategically applied increasing to individuals and groups politically and socially. Nice bundles to be handled. This labeling [[beyond mere words) greatly determines how communities are treated, are seen by others, and see themselves!

More than a few Detroiter's will not sign up - we know the end game of self-loathing. We know that it rarely works out for US to do it. Hotep.

I used hang out and lived in the ghetto hoods of Detroit for all of my life. Even when the hoods are nice and stable. There are always riff raffs, running about. Now they are everywhere and most of them don't need to visible. They are in disguise to fool the cops. Detroit is not going to get any better until they clean their trash...

Update: Both sides of the Eight-mile Woodward intersection are clean my last drive by there [[last Tuesday). The garage door of the nearby property where the homeless persons carts and debris seemed to have been stored is now closed.

It seems like there are the last two guys who seemingly just won't leave on the Detroit side, Ferndale side still seems to be clear. One of the remaining guys is this dude [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5POR7Ed2iiw) who has been there over 10 years.

The corridor is simply just a hot spot for cash, every time I drive by someone is giving them money or goods on that corner, once the money and the goods stop they will leave.

Items are located southwest corner of Stanley's Other Place parking lot with a large board to block the view from the street.

Metro-Detroit and suburbs is not going to end up like L.A.'s Skid Row. So far the suburban communities will do everything in their power to keep homeless folks away from squatting under freeway overpasses or any vacant homes. However they do allow them to panhandle on the streets.

Drove by there today, to go to a industrial cleaning store on the corner of Woodward and 8 Mile. They are back. Saw at least 5 homeless people with their mattresses, shopping carts, and personal items. So where ever they were, they weren't gone very long. Hope they can resolve the situation. It's sad.

No, how about making them work for a living.

I'm sick and tired of people worrying about their "rights" and not spending enough thinking about their RESPONSIBILITIES.

You have a RESPONSIBILITY to support yourself and not be a burden to your family or society.

You have a RESPONSIBILITY to stay clean and off drugs - being a junkie is no excuse and should garner you no sympathy from anyone, nor any claim on anyone's charity, and especially not the forced charity of taxpayer subsidies.

Why should I, someone who didn't make these mistakes have to pay for your poor choices in life? You need to live with the consequences of your actions. Maybe if that happened more often, more people would "miraculously" make better choices.

How about we say, either get a job or we put you in prison and make you work making license plates or other things for the people who are working.

How about we provide meaningful job training for people, but REQUIRE them to take the initiative to take advantage of it.

I think decent, hard working, taxpaying citizens who actually do the work to make society function have a right to walk down the street without having to look at the unsightly homeless encampments.

I think the police should make that a reality. Both the homeless people and society would be better off in the long run. Living on the street is a dead end.

Drove by today, the Ferndale side is still clear but the Detroit side has atleast 3 people who have moved back to that location. It’s usually a overweight woman who panhandles by the 8 mile stoplight before the underpass, and two males who panhandle along the SE corner of the intersection across from Auto Zone. I’ve even seen a tent set up next in the commercial lot next to Stanley’s on the SW corner too, that area must be a cash hot spot for the homeless because they keep coming back.
