Detroit
Boat Club
The
current Detroit Boat Club building was built in 1902 following
the destruction by fire of two previous club houses. Taking
that as a cue, the members built the current club house of concrete
and masonry. It is claimed to be the first concrete building
in the world.
The
original Detroit Boat Club was created in pre-yachting days
of 1839. Rowing was the primary focus and a hugely popular sport
of the 19th Century. Its first clubhouse was on the then outskirts
of the city at the foot of St.
Antoine.
