GREEKTOWN ROLLS THE DICE

When the Downtown Detroit collapse occurred in the late sixties and seventies, a one block long stretch of Monroe Street ran counter to those bleak events.

Named Greektown for the largely owned by Greek immigrant shops and restaurants that lined the strip, the area became increasingly vibrant.

On the eve of the opening of the Greektown Casino this once sleepy stretch, where elderly Greeks would click their worry beads over cups of muddy coffee and shots of ouzo in more carefree days, bears little resemblance to the Greektown of the late sixties.
