MISHKAN YISROEL SYNAGOGUE
The Mishkan Yisroel, aka the Blaine Shul as it is located on Blaine just west of
Linwood, is in many ways emblematic of the changes of its surrounding
neighborhood. Formerly a predominantly Jewish neighborhood, the Blaine
Shul, anchored the religious expression of its community. As the
neighborhood transformed to a predominantly African-American neighborhood, it
continued as a religious anchor in the new community. It has likewise suffered
from the decline of population in recent years and now stands decayed and
abandoned.
