Hundreds of volunteers clean up 8 Mile in Detroit

For half the day Saturday, volunteers painted 300 fire hydrants along 8 Mile, picked up trash, planted flowers and added some curb appeal to a few businesses on the way.

They were with the Eight Mile Boulevard Association's 16th annual Clean the D campaign, which focused on the 27-mile corridor between I-94 and I-275.

"We kind of work on the premise of beautification spurs more beautification," said Alan Weber, the association's associate director.

Tami Salisbury, the association's executive director, said they had a record 400 volunteers, in part because of posting a request for volunteers on the Believe in Detroit campaign Web site.

8MBA is an excellent organization. If I lived in the Detroit area, I definitely would have been there to help. Glad to see more improvements are happening.

Great to see this community improvement work happening along 8 Mile. I can think of a few other places where the fire hydrants could use some paint! Good for 8MBA.
