An Arbor Day tree planting and parade will help celebrate the completion of a 2-mile extension to the Conner Creek Greenway project on Detroit's east side.

The Detroit Eastside Community Collaborative is hosting Saturday morning's event along the Detroit River in Maheras Gentry Park.

After the tree planting, Merit Academy students will lead the parade.

The greenway creates walking and biking access to the river and is part of more than 23 miles of connected paths through Detroit. It will link east side neighborhoods, social agencies, schools, recreation areas and businesses.

Completed phases of the project include bike lanes on St. Jean from Mack to Jefferson, and the Riverfront Terminus, which runs along Clairpointe from Jefferson to the River in Maheras Gentry Park.
