Default Detroit to reach Bing's 1-year goal of 3,000 demolitions

    ASSOCIATED PRESS

Detroit is reaching Mayor Dave Bing's goal of demolishing 3,000 blighted and dangerous houses in one year.

Bing planned this afternoon to mark the 3,000th demolition under the effort at a house on the city's east side that's to be torn down.

The goal was to have 3,000 leveled by the end of April. The city has thousands of vacant structures as it deals with the effects of a shrinking population.

The mayor has vowed that another 3,000 houses would come down by April 2012. He wants 10,000 demolished by the time his four-year term ends in December 2013.

Only 860 empty houses were torn down by the city in 2009.

the city must get more aggressive with demolitions.. seek grant money from philanthropic groups.. start targeting the warehouses, empty/condemned apartment buildings, derelict storefronts.. train and hire locals to do the work..

They all ready received the money from the Fed aside from the city owned derelict property like the Ford was how about making currant owners accountable, how many demolitions involved private property, why should the rest of the country pay for improving private property owners land holding portfolios.

I agree, catch a scrapper give them a mask and a crow bar and start deconstruction along with non violent offenders.

I remember reading an article awhile back where it was saying in the past demolitions the houses were pushed into the basements then covered with dirt.

Here's the list of houses from when the City started. If anyone notices ahouse on the list that's still standing, I suggest you contact the Mayor's Office and the press to let them know that they missed one.
