Two local post offices set to close as mail service declines

26 billion fewer pieces of mail from last year

    4/11/2011

DEARBORN, Mich. [[WXYZ) - It’s the end of the line for two local post offices. The Teleford Postal Station in Dearborn and the Fisher Station in midtown Detroit will close on June 25th.

A spokesman for the US Postal service says the closure is the result of changing times.

Private companies like FedEx and UPS are cutting into business – the internet is also having a huge impact on mail service. Combine that with a struggling economy where companies are sending out fewer advertisements and you’ve got a decline of 26-billion fewer pieces of mail from last year.

Postal officials tell Action News they determined which post offices to close based on a study conducted last year. Among the factors that contributed to their decision to shutdown the two stations – postal volume, traffic and proximity to other facilities.

No jobs will be cut – postal officials say they will reassign workers and make-up for streamlining through attrition.

If you’re a customer of either of the stations set to close the USPS recommends you go to North End Station located at 60 Milwaukee Street in Detroit or the Dearborn Heights Branch located at 26200 Ford Road in Dearborn Heights.

That's too bad, Teleford was my local station in West Dearborn and it's too bad that had to be one of the ones to close. Is the Fisher Station actually in the Fisher Building?

Haha. Teleford was where I filed Selective Service. Fitting that it should go.

Yeah, I think the Fisher station is the PO in the basement of the Fisher.
