Dozens of religious organizations were convinced Rivera had mocked the Holy Trinity in a panel that depicts a child vaccination. The scene shows a young child with a horse, a cow and sheep at the infant's feet. The composition of the figures forms a triangle like that of a nativity scene.
Religionists are sooo self-centered, so quick to take offense. The cow and the horse both were involved in the production of the first vaccines. I'd guess that the same would be true of sheep. But of course, scientifically ignorant religionists were convinced that Rivera would take the time to take a swipe at their beliefs. lol

Reading about this tempest in a teapot reminded me of the flap surrounding the Rivera mural at Rockefeller Center as depicted in Tim Robbins's movie "Cradle will Rock". In that mural Rivera depicted Lenin and Marx as well as syphilis cells above the heads of a group of carousing rich people.

Went down last evening to hear some of the musical acts. The performances by Marcus Belgrave and Spencer Barefield at the First Congregational Church had pretty good turnouts. And the “Quantum Leap: Complex Science, Social Justice Movements and Hip-Hop” with Invincible at the Science Center Planetarium was SRO with folks being turned away.

    Anyone else check it out?

Wow ! I remember when I lived in Detroit all the shoes that were left everywhere on the streets. Then I started seeing pairs of shoes on the middle line of streets. I wonder if Tyree Guyton was doing that then. Would have been in the mid 70's.

That panel was meant to be in the style of a religious painting. Personally, I don't think that is the same as mocking the actual religion, but they weren't imagining the similarities.

Kids would throw pairs of shoes across the telephone lines out here in Southfield too. Thank goodness it didn't become a tradition.

In a television interview, Guyton said that his installation was supposed to represent the homeless of the world. But high heels and brand new inline skates don't say that to me.

As for the religious similarities in the Rivera mural, some chrisitians see Jesus every time they see anything resembling a bearded man. If a smear is blue with a rounded top, they see the Virginl.

I think you made a mistake in your headline. Didn't you mean to make "ego" plural instead of possesive? And, I have to ask - is WTF your standard sign off?

Wow! Nice job supporting local Detroit artists! They get 1 week to show off their stuff and you rip on it like they didn't deserve it. These people worked hard for years to get where they are and they deserve the recognition and support, even if you don't have the same aesthetic taste as them. If you hate it so much stay up in Birmingham and "go fly a kite" as you seem to like doing that.

What is going on with this board lately? This is supposed to be a hub of Detroit pride, with people sharing ideas on how to improve and support our city, but every thread on here is all locals bitching about how efforts to improve the city are all failures, before they are even implemented or have a chance to happen.

If Detroit is full of people who want it to fail, then gosh, I am pretty worried about the future of this city. Everyone is bitching about how light rail sucks, eastern market improvements suck, ArtX sucks.... I'm wondering who around here actually likes this place?

People never seem to wonder that until their pet project gets shit on.

Everything sucks, nothing is good enough, why can't Detroit be like xxxxx.

Oh yeah, coming from an individual whose town's main claim to fame is the
Townsend Hotel!!!!! You people up there are so full of yourselves, I'm surprised you even bother to come to the horrible, evil Detroit.
I attended this event on Wednesday evening, and while I may not appreciate ALL
the art involved...I am mature enough to realize that taste is something different
for all of us. Obviously, The Kresge Foundation people saw enough in these individuals to award them grants. Perhaps it is YOU who simply doesn't understand
contemporary art. Whatever...You have the right to not like the show. But to demean the individuals by calling them a "Joke" is a bit ....well, Stupid...IMO.
I especially enjoyed the Kristin Beaver installation, as it was tremendously personal and inspired, and.... damned good art!!!
    So there.

Holy cow was that CRAZY !!! It should have been called the "I hate Ruins Porn" panel discussion/smackdown. It got wild - with swearing and people getting all pissed off about Downriver.

Definitely worth the price of admission !

Unrelenting cynicism has been a feature of this board for as long as I've been reading it. Yet I keep coming back because it's still the best source of information on what's happening in Detroit, and there are many smart, passionate people here who are committed to Detroit's revitalization. I wish they were more vocal though.

Art X isn't for everyone. However, one of the hallmarks of a vibrant community is an abundance of choices. It's only logical to assume that at least some of said choices will not meet with your approval for one reason or another.

So you saw every artist's presentation and everyone bored you? Your blanket condemnation with absolutely no specifics borders on trolling. If there is something you dislike give the forum your honest critique or don't waste our time with nonsensical inflammatory posts.

I second these comments. And just because we Detroiters don't want our city totally gentrified,
doesn't mean we don't want to see improvements. Not EVERYTHING proposed for the rebuilding
of Detroit is a GREAT idea, and should be implemented immediately.
There are many outstanding features surrounding us here, which most of us find,
not only endearing, but essential, to keeping Detroit beautiful...and yes, proud.
That's not to say we don't need a lot of work and improvement, but let's face it...turning Detroit
into Birmingham ain't one of them...thanks anyway.
Ps., keep up the good words DYES'ERS !!!!!!!!
