Default Changing faces with a smile - Operation Smile

    Warning: she'll break your heart.

    http://www.operationsmile.org/donate
See what you can do to help. Support Operation Smile and help change lives one smile at a time.

An amazing little girl who had her cleft lip surgery. People ask me why I volunteer overseas so much. It takes my eyes off me and allows me to remember what life is all about. When we use what we have been given [[whatever that might be) to make a positive change for our world, that's when life make sense. In a time when the world seems to be imploding with greed, there are certain things that will always remain invaluable, like the smile on this girl's face when she realises her life will be changed forever.

Her life has impacted mine as I have hers. But that's what it's all about. Both being happier because the miracle of life allowed us to cross one another's paths and leave each other in a better place because we met. Without judgment.

Her lip is still swollen and painful as she is only 24 hours post surgery but the joy in her eyes is unmistakable and makes my heart laugh without measure. I hope it brings the same to you.

"Along came a team of funny people." There's an understatement.

At 1:54 she's wiping a tear from her cheek no doubt from the trauma of the operation/anesthesia.

Man the pause button to appreciate all the emotions she goes through while recognizing her new appearance.

That video killed me Jimaz. My Lil' Bro was born with a cleft lip and Pallet. Lucky as he was to have been born here we fixed him up right away. He now dates the hottest girls and has a great job for the DOD flying troops around Afghanastan.
On another note I was in Peru at an outdoor cafe having a great time when a little girl came up behind me asking me for coin. I tried to brush her off until my friend pointed at her for me to look. She was about 12 and holding her 4 year old Lil' Sis who also had a cleft. I shed a tear or two as well as a few bucks knowing full well that cleft was probablt the main family income.

Yes, it's very inspirational. One of the YouTube comments was from a med school student who had all but quit because it was so difficult. He said this video inspired him to go back to school. I expect him to perform more than a few miracles in his career because of this.

It would be nice to see a photo of the girl after she's completely healed. I've searched for more information but came up empty. Even the patient's history section of their Brazilian website makes no mention of her.

If she ever happens to become a model, with that video on her resume, I would expect her career to skyrocket. Who else could match that?

It just makes you want to go out and commit some anonymous random acts of kindness.

Whitehouse posted this link in another thread -- this is an Italian baby who only wants to listen to Led Zeppelin. It is just too cute for words.

How curious that the cold-hearted among us rarely respond to things like Changing faces with a smile - Operation Smile.

Perhaps they have a smattering of shame after all, despite their bravado.

    NOT so fun video -

Trying to use free speech against the Wall Street Fellowship, protesters are maced by THE LAW. Shame on the people who gamble on our lives for they're own multi-million dollar paychecks. They probably enjoy scenes like this.

I hope they choke and die on their Cuban cigars, limousines, $3000 call girls, and $1000 lunches. Wall Street shows us the WORST of humanity.

Default Good Explanation Of How Differential Steering Works

I suspect Ray1936 can be spotted somewhere in this Jam Handy video.

    Attachment 11584
Good Explanation Of How Differential Steering Works

"One wheel drive" LOL! "Steering" isn't quite the right word but this video does an outstanding job of developing a simple explanation of a difficult subject.

Not mentioned in this video is how the early mechanical analog computers used just such a gear train, but driven in reverse, to add two numbers. Each number to be added was represented by an amount of rotation of each "wheel." An amount of rotation representing the mean of the two numbers was produced at the drive shaft end. Then, after attaching a gear with half the number of teeth of the drive shaft gear, the resulting amount of rotation of that gear represented double the mean [[average) of the two input numbers i.e., the sum of the two numbers.

I find it just amazing that two numbers can be added by driving an automotive differential in reverse. It's quite steampunky.

LOL! At 1:53, the lead motorcyclist creates an inclusion that would lead to a disaster. They mercifully cut the film before showing the resulting implosion.

You're most welcome, Teresa. As always, all credit goes to the original authors.

It's a pity that "Changing faces with a smile - Operation Smile" was blocked by EMI. It was such a heartfelt video. Can anyone help resurrect it?

Zapatou's "Welcome to Earth" compilation was predictably doomed from the start given that it spanned so much copyrightable material.

So many givers blocked by so many takers. <sigh> What a shame.

    Their loss.

Worthy of full screen viewing:Just because I love the way he depicts Hofstadter's idea of JOOTSing, or "Jumping Out Of The System." Termaat jumps out of a system that he himself created—then jumps back in!

Thank you for that contribution, Slartibarfast. It's similar to dream sequences in the 1984 remake.
