Glad to see some of the fruits of Proposal S' investment being seen and helping out the kids. And great to see at least some of the money being invested in the older historic and architecturally significant schools in the district, and not all on old building demolition/new construction.

New gym unveiled at Detroit's Bethune-Fitzgerald Academy

Detroit — A 10-foot rock-climbing wall, six basketball hoops and bleacher seating for 200 are some of the features of a new 10,100-square-foot gymnasium at Bethune-Fitzgerald Academy.

Detroit Public Schools officials unveiled the project Wednesday at the pre-K through eighth-grade school on the city's west side.

The athletic wing, part of $8.4 million in renovations, was funded through a construction program Detroit voters approved in November 2009 with the $500.5 million Proposal S bond. The program includes renovating or rebuilding 18 schools.

The project took eight months and is the second school the district has completed under the construction program, officials said.

Other projects for the school include converting two classrooms into a media center, a new parents' area and adding a reception area and conference rooms for the administrative offices.

The renovated school also will feature a remodeled main entry vestibule and upgrades to the building's roof, lighting, floors and electrical, heating and cooling systems.
