    Default mardi gras curious

since detroit is originally french based - has there ever been a “big” celebration of fat tuesday around here? i understand the paczki’s and the other ethnic acknowledgements but has there ever been parades or parties in the past?

Mardi Gras is not celebrated in France or Quebec the way it is celebrated among the Cajuns. Traditions evolve locally. Not everything has to be uniform. For example we have our St. Patrick's Day parade on the Sunday before St. Patrick's day. This is not the case everywhere else. In fact St. Patrick's Day is bigger in Chicago where the actual Irish population is one of the smaller ethnic groups than it is in Dublin. Chicago's Polish population is enourmous but they do not compare in Pazcki Day festivities to what is foound here.

thanks. seems like a missed opportunity for a mid winter "celebration". then again the woodward dream cruise was just an idea a few years ago... maybe this will plant an idea in someones noggin.
