Thom talks to Richard Trumka, President, AFL-CIO, on right to push for union independence.... and they're even removing authority from elected officials and giving that authority to unelected people to fire and to nullify contracts and to govern cities. Now think of what would have happened in a foreign country if somebody were to say "Okay, this person was elected but we're removing them. We're putting in this appointed official that fired the elected officials, got rid of all the contracts and done everything." That's happening right now in Michigan. These are the assaults on us and it's an attempt to try to silence any voice of opposition for the 2012 elections....They're trying to suppress votes of everybody, the elderly, Latinas, African Americans, workers, everybody who they think is opposition. In fact it's any progressive voice out there, they're trying to silence it, get it out of the way or at least minimize it.... The rule of law in America has broken down. And considering that we were founded as a nation of laws - that whole "republic" thing that Republicans like to talk about - this is a troubling development. Right now - there are at least a dozen officials from the Bush administration who committed war crimes - politicized our Justice Department - and leaked the name of a CIA agent for political gain - who have yet to face the American justice system for their crimes.

Thom Hartmann: Break up California into 3 States - and help fix America
Every ten years the House of Representatives gets reshuffled. Based on census data, states may gain or lose Congressional seats depending on how many people enter or leave certain states. This ensures that the House reflects the changing population in America. As a result of last year's census, the state of Ohio is slated to lose two Congressional seats in next year's election. And since Republicans control the state legislature in Ohio, they're picking off the progressive districts - most notably the 10th district of Ohio, a district faithfully represented by Dennis Kucinich for more than 14 years. Now Kucinich, a leading voice among progressives, has to look for a new district to represent just to stay in Congress. Rumor has it he's been looking around near Seattle in Washington State which is gaining a congressional seat because that state's population has grown. So while the House is constantly adding or subtracting congresspeople depending on how many people have moved into or out of the various states, guess what the Senate is doing?
