Those works in LEGO are made by Jim Garrett of Oakland County... who's also known as "Deco Jim". He displayed a lot of buildings of Detroit for the National Model Railway Association [[NMRA) convention at Cobo Center in August 2007.

There is a group called MichiLUG [[or Michigan LEGO User Group) that builds a lot of large scale LEGO structures for exhibitions locally and nationally. They do exhibits at Orchestra Hall every December.

The number of AFOLs [[Adult Fans Of LEGO) has grown to over 100,000 worldwide... mostly adults who buy LEGO for their kids, and become addicted to it all over again.

There is an online super website LEGO marketplace called BRICKLINK, where nearly 3000 sellers worldwide sell over 80 million LEGO parts. It's where folks like Jim Garrett get most of their parts to build massive constructions.

One Detroit area builder was building a mini version of downtown... I can't recall his name or if he finished... but attached is a pic of part of his downtown scape.

I can't wait to have kids. Then I'll have an excuse to do what I really want to do - play with legos.

The period in which a teenager stops playing with LEGO [[it's both singular and plural) and starts up again as an adult [[usually after buying some for your children) is known as the "Dark Ages".

Most who come out as AFOLs [[Adult Fans of LEGO) go thru a Dark Ages... although some few may continue on in their later teenage years and never have a Dark Ages.

What's the best place to buy legos? Do they have them at Kmart's?

There's a legos store on my street that has this wall where you can fill a cup full of bricks of any type you want. It would sure take a lot of those cups to build the towers Jim made

Found him on Flickr. I'm not a member, but perhaps through it you can find him.

That's the PAB [[Pick-A-Brick) wall at all LEGO Company Stores. The only one I recall in Michigan so far is at Somerset North.

Many LEGO hobbyists have it down to an artform as to how many LEGO bricks they can squeeze [[or assemble) within one of those cups. You're charged by the cupful not weight.

The best and largest selection of LEGO is at the BRICKLINK site listed above... over 100,000,000 parts in all colors and sizes sold from over 4,000 individuals worldwide.

Gistok, I enjoyed the photo's you posted in 2007[[?) of the Detroit Lego Scenes. I really liked one that had the People Mover in it. Please post a link to that thread so me and others can enjoy them.

Now if we could only get the Lee Plaza "actually" moved there....

By the way, I'm working on another LEGO book on CD... Volume II. Volume I covered the years 1949-80, Volume II will cover the years 1980-95.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with my work... I'm a LEGO Historian [[even the LEGO Company in Billund Denmark comes to me with historical questions!).

Here's an old link [[with some bugs) but you should be able to view all the chapters of the Volume I LEGO CD I wrote in 2006.... [[the "Buy it Now" function doesn't work here anymore)...

There's free downloadable chapters, in case you want some historic sets/parts info.
