Is there a quick & easy [[& free) way to recycle residential computer equipment in this area? Googling just gave a list of businesses who seem to do large-scale services.

Best Buy will take used equipment, including old CRT monitors, for recycling, no charge. You will have to remove the hard drive before they'll take the computer or they will do it for you for a charge.
