On a different note, if you measure 1 miles east of the RenCen on Jefferson, this is right in the middle of Rivertown. Does that mean that previous plans for the riverfront under Archer are effectively scrapped? Also, does it mean the permenant end of "Rivertown" as a bar/warehouse district?

Sigh ... they really destroyed the warehouse district for the casino that didn't locate there. I do think it would be nice if the Riverwalk could use the "green space" instead of the old folks' home.

I believe they are using an existing building for this project. The building in question is a mid century industial office building that is located directly across from the UAW/GM center and adjacent to Strohs Riverplace property. This project along with the proposal for the Riverside Hospital site should help stabilized this area.

On a related topic: Does any one know the status of the Uniroyal Site and the outcome of the police retirement board request to build their office at Henderson Park?

The rendering for the project on Freep.com looked pretty nice, and it sounds like it'll be fairly high-end. Considering how little has gone on in this neighborhood, I take it for the good news that it is. This is going north of the GM/UAW center, so it's not like it's on prime riverfront land, either, though, I'd not fault it much if it were. Detroiters are as derserving as any other of nice environments in which to get health care and live out their final years. It's also good to see for-profits and non-profits collaborating on projects like this which has tangible benefits to the quality of life in the city. Good on the parties involved.

I don't mind the elderly living on the Riverfront instead of section 8 with lazy no good boyfriends staying with the girlfriends who have one or more kids.

Wow that's pretty slick looking. I like the design. The parking sucks though. Wish that could be better concealed.

I think it is a good idea to have assisted living on that site. Don't get me wrong. Everyone on section 8 is not letting their boyfriends live with them who destroys the area. Sometimes buildings in Detroit's prime area decide to go to section 8 [[ Martin Luther King, Lafayette Towers at one time, and another apartment building I can't name) and become a haven for crime and gangs due to some of the women letting their lazy boyfriends stay with them. The boyfriends often times destroy the area, break in other tenants apartments, and devalue the property

I'm not sure how explaining what you meant makes it anymore relevent to the discussion. I totally got what you meant the first time, I'm just confused as how it's even appropriate to go off on such a tangent when this project has nothing to do with Section 8, or why your mind even went there? Here we have some good news and you fly off the handle with some Section 8 diatribe. It's times like these I wonder if I'd have simply better avoiding the place, because this type of crap just lowers the quality of discussions.

Did it say in the article that it was a renovation? Gallagher is slipping. He said it would "rise," which to me means new construction. If they're renovating an old building, that should be in the top paragraph!

Am i thinking of the right UAW building? The one I'm thinking is just south of jefferson at van dyke which would have it a bit past what I'd consider to still be rivertown.

Great news though and I hope it works out. A lot of seniors in the region are in a tough spot right now because many are getting a bit old to maintain a house yet having little luck selling. Similar to my thoughts on the palmer park apt area making a comeback eventually there will always be a demand for housing that isn't single family houses whether its for young people, the elderly, or people who just don't want all the maintenance, expenses, and permanence of a house.

We have an excellent riverfront that is still underused but making some progress. I've been looking at apartments in the area just to see the river from my window, hopefully you can see the river from at least part of this new develpment; its very relaxing.

I know that the building would become a senior citizen complex. I was just saying that I am glad that the plans are for to make it that instead of a low income apartment building
